Longtime member taking a step out of lurking... heh
I have an 88yj that I really haven't used in the last 2 years since I moved away from my hometown. For the most part its just been sitting at my parents house and driven around once in a while. While its not really costing me any money, and I'd really really love to keep it, I've been tossing around the idea of selling it to get some cash to help pay off some bills and get me back on track financially.
Here is where I need to make some decisions...
It's currently not inspected, needs a battery, but it will run with a jump from another car. I can't decide if I want to part it out, sell it as is, or get it inspected and toss a wally world battery in it. The last is probably the best bet.
I have a lot of things going on right now, trying to get into a new trucking job, moving from one place to another and going through a break up. My mind is kind of a little stretched, foggy, blurred from everything right now so I'm just looking for some advice, good or bad to help get me back on track.
Rest of the stats on it...

Damn, that's a nice looking Jeep. If you need to sell it, sell it. You can always find one to build again later. If you are going to sell it, I wouldn't part it out.

I think you would regret selling it,
But if you do I would sell it whole. Don't part it out that's a really good looking jeep, I would actually love to hear about you putting that CJ clip on.
I think you should put a battery in it and make a decision after the weather gets better. We all tend to make really bad jeep decisions in cold weather.

Keep it.
I'm pretty much sure that I will be selling my YJ in the upcoming weeks/month. I need the cash, and someday I will build one bigger and better.
If it's not a can't afford it and need the money situation, keep it.

If you think what you could get out of it would help than I would consider it. It's not costing you anything. I would think long and hard before I did.
Nice ride by the way!
Is a good looking ride dood. Since you aren't using it, sell it. Let someone who will take care of it have it for a while.
I wouldn't even do the inspection. Just get a cheap battery and let it run. Most states back this way don't require inspections so that would be a waste of your $$$.

Nice Jeep! really! As what has been said, if you are not using it, sell it, whole! But also know, when you sell it, it will cost you plenty to replace it later on. Everytime I've had a jeep and sold it, I regreted it and bought another one, for alot more money..good luck!

The rear plastic guard, i was looking at those for my YJ, did you just buy the TJ ones and they fit or did you have to do something special? I haven't seen any made specifically for a YJ

Thanks for all the kind words on it and advice. I've totally taken "parting it out" off the table now, I'd really hate to see it broken up.
I'm going home to where it is stored this weekend, and I'm going to sit down and actually crunch the numbers. I know people post about selling their jeeps alot and how it's hard sometimes, but I understand that now, I've had this thing for 10 years now, and put alot of time and work into it. It's funny, I think back to when I first got it, and ordered my rock knob shifter for it and got my first Qtec mag and was instantly hooked. Back then I couldn't even change my oil and barely knew how to put washer fluid in the thing. Now I have a ton of tools and would have no problem pulling the body off, tearing the engine, tranny and tcase down, and putting them all back together. Here is a pic from about a week after I picked it up.

Yay pep boys rally lights!
To answer a few questions from earlier, the cj clip was actually not that hard to do, took about 5 hours and a few sodas ( I hate beer) and some metal bending and hammering. Actually, it's not even the full front clip, I just used a cj hood and cj grill. I put the hood on and lined it up so the gap across the cowl was even and then with the old yj grill and radiator out I was able to massage my yj fenders inwards in the front and the hood lined up. After that I mocked up the grill and radiator and fastened it all together. I did have to trim some of the bottom of the grill away from the powersteering box and the hardlines. I kept the stock yj radiator, just had to modify the shroud and mount a bit on the passenger side, and make some bracing and fab up a new mount on the drivers side. If I didn't hack off the very front of the fenders, it would not have lined up as well as the front flat parts of a yj fender are contoured differently than a cj grill, but I cut those out well before the cj stuff. I'd start a new topic on this with pics, but they are on my other computer with the burnt out power supply, and I dont feel like swapping drives all that much.
As far as inspection, here in PA they are a pain, and required every year. I'm pretty sure it would pass and only be about 80 bucks, but that and a battery, thats like 100 bucks I really can't spare right now. Although now I think of it, I could clear out some parts that are collecting dust in the shed. Also, as far as emissions, I'm not sure it would pass. My county just has a visual I believe, but since I've tossed on a new carb, I dont know if that would pass or not. In the last 6 years or so since I've swapped that on there, I've only driven like 4000 miles a year, and anything under 5k a year is emissions exempt (minus the federal stuff).
And the rear plastic guard, I need a nap as I haven't really been sleeping all that well, and I don't really know what piece you are talking about, sorry.
Anywho, thanks to all who replied, it's helped.

Nah, its metal, black diamond plate. I want to say it was something with warrior in it. Like Warrior Products or UpWarrior. They both sound familiar. I got the ones with no cutouts or drilling, I wouldn't do that again, cutting them for the hinges and lights was a PAIN with my little handtools at the time. I got them uncut thinking I was going to put a cj tailgate on, but never sourced out the gate.
edit: I looked at the pics again, they really do look like that plastic diamond plate that besttop sells.
