short vid from local tv station:

this is the county next to us... and we (Ray City) share jurisdiction with another department from Lanier County. The stuff you hate to hear about... two brothers, one was pronounced dead at the scene and the other critical, i believe life flighted to Emory. I think there will be more coming of the story as it progresses... but out of something like 12 members at this one station, 5 are from one family.

the wife of the deceased was driving the second apparatus a short distance behind the accident vehicle. not sure if they witnessed the accident, but they had to extricate one of their own.... with one that was obviously beyond help upon thier arrival. Keep these guys in your prayers... and when you hear a siren... remember that whoever is in that vehicle is risking theirs to save ours.

That's horrible....:(
I get so angry when I see an emergency vehicle with lights and siren blaring and still a few cars not pulling over, or even seeming to care

Wow, awful. I know that intersection well.

Here in Charleston, emergency vehicles have to find their way through traffic that won't move. See it happen all the time.

That is so sad everytime I here of something along those lines. I had a buddy that T-boned a car that thought they could out run that big ol' firetruck. Unfortunatly the car lost. That was one incedent that bothered the buddy of mine for quite a while.

I worked for a private ambulance company for 4 years, and was a volunteer firefighter for a while also, and it never ceased to amaze me at the stupidity of some of the drivers. Whether shear stupidity, or panic, they would do some of the dumbest things!

I still shudder everytime I see a little car cut off a semi, or even a straight truck. They just don't realize that it is impossible to stop that much weight in the same distance as it takes their car to stop. It is even worse when you get a firetruck with that water sloshing forward and back adding more momentum to stop.

well, i didnt say much on this afterwards....

as it turns out, Lori and I know the wife of Derek North, Ruby. We went to high school together. There were several people from that area that we went to school with, but have not seen in years. We went to the funeral today. It lasted from about 2pm till about 5:30 including a 10-15 mile procession. The procession was spread out to roughtly 7 miles according to one of the firefighters at the rear. There were more than 35 emergency vehicles in the procession and a couple hundred cars. Lori and I were in the last 1/3 of the procession. The community really showed alot of support... which is the way it is in a small town.

Tuesday, we took "Rosie", the Mobile Fire Fighter Memorial truck to the funeral home. Here she is on a fellow FF's trailer. (don't think that trailer will ever be the same :) )

being on the Honor Guard at the PD, this is the first public service funeral that i merely attended and was not a participant. it was a little surreal.... and somber. and ... it was by far the largest ever. the local law enforcement couldn't maintain it all and i had to stop to move out a procession skipper.
