WE had to smog a older veeehickel this week and there is now a new smog test on the fuel tank. Not only dose your gas cap get checked, but the pressurize the fuel tank with hydrogen and check for leaks there too. But only on veeeehickels older than 10 years. Well the 88 Dodge van did not pass this test. To find the leak they charged $80.00 to pressurize the the tank with some kind of smoke and look for the the leak.
BTW the CA Air Resource Board (or C.A.R.B, like that makes them sound cooler)has been given too much power. They want, no, they are ordering that all older on-highway trucks (Peterbilt, Mach, Kenworth, ect) install $20,000 emission systems. The trucking company will pass this cost on to the shipper and they pass to the comsumer. And on top of that the smog nazis say that dariy cows pullute too much. What kind of catalytic converter are they going to install on a cow?
I like to breath clean air as much as the next guy but come on!

Geez... I can barely get my YJ through inspection here. I can't imagine having to do it out in CA. Good luck.

MY YJ still hasn't passed and I have had it for 4 years
Parts installed
New oxegen sensor
New catalytic converter
New Carter carb
Full tune up plugs and wires
I have tryed ever trick in the book and still wont pass
But I am saving for a Howell Injection maybe that will do the trick but the smog nazis might not let that pass even with a C.A.R.B sticker

Where I live, they have this Rapid Screen test were a van sits at the side of the road (usually on freeway entrance ramps) and your car is screened without a stop at one of the test stations. I know I did not pass one of their vans, but yet I passed according to my registration notice. When I asked for the results, I was told that they (Rapid Screen) do not have the specs but they do know I have passed.

I would suggest cigarette smoke. ;):p

Az is getting the same way as we speak. last time i went through emmisions after 8 tries and $1000 my 90 yj barely squeeked by (by like two points.) I had given up trying to adjust the carb myself and went to one of those emmisions repair joints. he drove my rig through the test and it passed. what changed? nothing except for my savings account. jeep never ran right again. just installed a howell two weeks ago on my rig and it has never ran this good. also picked up 1.5 mpg im itching to see how it peforms in april when i take the big test again. if it fails this year im just going to register it in texas

I think in NJ you can get a waiver on the emissions test or certain parts of it if you show that you spent a certain amount of money trying to get it fixed.
