Message was officially released today, as of 01Mar09, I will be an E-6. Been waiting on this message since July of last year, can't believe it finally came out.
Mo money, mo weight allowed for my household goods when I move this year, and mo housing allowance, tis is a good thing.
If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go back to doing the happy dance.:D

Well, putting it as simply as possible...
When someone enlists in the military and goes to boot camp, it is as an E1. Usually graduate bootcamp as an E2. The ranks progress along with the numbers, each one becoming more of a technical expert in thier profession and gaining more responsibility. E9 is the highest rank attainable by an enlisted person (not even going to try explaining E10's, they are a special deal). E7 and above is pretty much management positions and are almost seperate from the rest of the enlisted folks.
Hope that makes sense.

All the military branches use the same pay scale, ammount per rank depends on time in.
Here's a link to this years scale.

Of course, that is just base pay, it does not include housing allowance, food allowance, uniform allowance, special pay, etc. You'll never get rich in the military, but as long as you are not foolish with your money, you can live comfortably. The saving grace is that only pay is taxed, allowances are tax free. Gross pay on the W2 looks pretty crappy, but when you add the other income (my allowances work out to almost 2/3 of my base pay) it all works out ok.
Sooner, I'll be a Petty Officer First Class (PO1). The CG uses the same rank structure as the Navy.
Thanks all, I'm pretty stoked.

It comes with a cost though, I've averaged 200 days a year away from home for just over 12 years now. It does get old, but overall, I love it.

Congrats!
One of the few jobs that you get a raise in pay no matter the economy. Outside the government sector, raises are not realistic. In fact, bonuses and matching contributions do not exist this year.
I got a Christmas bonus and 10% contribution w/o me having to match. Let me say... I've never received a bonus before. I was thinking a hundred bucks or something... I was PLEASANTLY suprised... ;)

That's sometimes truer than most think. Lots of folks have no idea that there's been Coasties over in the sand box since the start of the war, got a lot of shipmates that have either done a tour, or are getting ready for one.

Hmmm, think this year I'll cross the 14 year mark, wow, where does the time go? Sometimes it feels like I've been in forever, sometimes I can't believe it's been as long as it has. I'd do it all over again though, had a lot of fun, seen a lot of places, met a lot of great people, and feel like I've had the opportunity to make a difference on quite a few occasions.
Thanks for the congrats all.
