If you have just replaced your speedo gear and now your speedo isn't working, this very well may fix your problem. For those of you who have just installed a SYE, you will want to see the pix at the bottom of this write up.

Now for you guys who have the stock Transfercase (TC) and you just change your speedo gear because you either changed your gearing or put on larger tires, you may have reinstalled your speedometer off calibration.

On your TC, there will be a little nipple or hump

Now look on your sending unit (speedo) and you will find two sets of numbers. 26-31 and 32 -36. These are your calibration number that you will use to line up on the "nipple". Your new gear will be in the set of numbers on the unit. If you installed a 34 tooth gear, then you would line up the 32-36 set of numbers.

Now install the sending unit into the TC being sure to line up the numbers that apply to the gear you installed with the nipple. You may have to tweak the unit a little for the hold down clamp to line up. What is important is that the numbers are within proxemity of the nipple.

And thats it. really pretty simple. Fasten down the hold down clapm and you are good to go. If yout speedo still doesnt work, then very possibly you may have a bad unit or the electrical contacts are dirty.

Now for you SYE guys/gals...there is NO NIPPLE or hump on the tail houseing of the SYE. What you do is you line up the correct speedo numbers with the clamp.

Real simple..Hope this helps.

my speedometer didn't work, and i just replaced my speed sensor, and it still doesn't work. could this be the problem? I checked my wiring, and contacts going into the back of the speedometer and stuff, and power was getting to everything. (i used my volt meter to check it). so could those gears that go into the TC be bad? if this is my problem, what set of numbers do i line up to that little "nipple" on the TC if i have 33" tires?

The number of teeth on the gear constitute the position of the sending unit...

Chances are that you still have the "stock OEM" speedo gear (usually a 31..you can count the teeth on the gear to be sure) and if it is the stock gear, you would line up the numbers 26-31 on the nipple..give that a try..good luck

EDIT: Tires wont matter..it only matters IF you have changed the speedo gear to compensate for your tires. If you have not changed the speedo gear, go with the stock setting of 26-31

great. i took the sending unit out, took it all apart again, cleaned it up, and put it back together... and it still doesn't work. ugh. so it must be either the speedometer itself, or something in the computer. any ideas?

It might be corroded on the back side of the speedometer. Mine isn't working right now either so I'm going to try DrLewall's fix and if that don't work I'll check the speedometer. Is there power out to the sensor?

yeah I know it's a real PIA to be messin with something that you take apart a couple of times and it still doesnt work..the only thing I can think of now is looking behind the dash board. I guess you could contort yourself in your floor board looking up into the dash but not sure if you'd be able to see anything of importance, like a loose wire on the speedo itself.

Here comes the PIA part, you may have to take the dash out and to do that, you will have to drop the windshield and under the windshield will be the torx screws for the dash. After you get those out, you will have to remove the dash panel above the steering wheel and then you can peel the dash fwd a bit to get behind it and while you are at it, NOW is a great time to replace any burnt out instument lights. You might also look on the back of the speedo and make sure the instrument electrical strip is in place and would hurt to make sure its clean and making full contact.

Thats abt the only other thing I can think off..am pretty sure that isnt what you wanted to hear tho..good luck and if you happen to "figger it out", stop in here and let us know.

I don't think you have to drop the windshield to get to the back of the speedo?

You may be correct..I only did so that I can get back there and service a few things.

yeah, i took out the speedo a few weeks ago to replace a burnt bulb on my tac. and it was pretty simple, just a few phillips screws on the face of the dash, above, and below the steering wheel.

but i'll have to "yank her off" and check everything out again. i just hope i don't have to end up getting a whole new speedo/tac cluster!

Thanks again Doc! i'll post back with what i find out!
