I just purchased my first Jeep; a 1988 YJ from the 2nd owner. I am now officially addicted! It has a 258 6 w. 5spd. The trans was rebuilt about 50k ago. The Jeep shifts fine w. no noises, etc. The problem is the trans grinds going into 2nd gear. It only does this when down-shifting, or occasionally when up-shifting under strain. The Jeep had been parked in a garage for the last 1-1/2 years, and owner stated it did not do this b/f being parked. If traveling VERY slow, it doesn't grind. I'd like to spend my money on other improvements b/f tearing down the trans. Any ideas?

Sounds like one of the syncros isnt working as it should..if it gets worse, you'll have to get into it..

i'm not sure, but i think even shifting too fast can make your syncros go bad. Doc, or anyone? back me up? like i said, i'm not positive, but it would be nice to know, haha

Rough Shifting (http://www.cdmfabrication.com/50l.html)

Read the link above. But speed shifting doesn't always give the synchros time to bring everything to a stop, therefore could place more wear on the sliders, but not always.

My Jeep needs an attitude adjustment everynow and then, and sometimes going sideways in 2nd gear with a no lift shift does the trick..... :D

If I swap a 89 or later AX15; will it bolt right up to my tc? Are there any issues with the input shaft, etc? I know Ill need the bell housing from AX15.

Hey I speed shift....

But only when I race this dumb kid Tomo who has a 4 banger Tiberon who blew his tranny racing me!!! JEEP WINS JEEP WINS!!! :owned:

He blew his syncs from sport shifting a non sports car.

On another note I am considering cutting 2 or 3 inches off my shift leaver. Not to sport shift, I'm doing it so I can put big drinks in the cup holders and so I dont hit my buttons on my deck shifting to third.

It feels nice actually. I have fooled around with it some and holding lower on the leaver feels quite cumftorable.

 :hijack: Sorry about going so far off topic but sport shifting a jeep just got me started
