so, as many of you probably know, i just lifted the '92 YJ. it was a 4" suspension, then i put on some 33" tires to go with it.
anyway... anybody have some opinions on wether or not it's necessary to get different, or stronger axles? like a D44, or an 8.8? What would be the advantages of slappin' one on? and is there anything else i would need to go with it?

Your D30 is OK in the front if you swap to the larger 297 ujoint axle shafts.
A D44 out of a late 80's Cherokee makes a good rear axle swap donor. That's what I used when I swapped my rear axle on my 93 YJ.
Here's a link to my writeup on the D44 swap.

Im in the same boat. looking for better axles but i dont wanta spend much seeing as how im a few months im gonna be passing on my YJ to the GF and i get a new TJ or JK rubi. most ppl say that with 33's you will need better rear end if you do alot of offroading but, IF your carfull i bet you could make the 35 last a while

This is a foolish statement and here is why!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After my first D35 blew up, I have never trusted them and cringe when people but big tires and lockers in that axle.

Now on my TJ I trust my 8.8 for 33's

I have seen first hand how truly unreliable these axles are. At best they are light duty car axles!!!!!!!!!

YEA he does have a point i guess. i think if you ran the d35 ofr a short while it should be ok. any more then like 6 months i would start to worry. I know that I myslef will not even runa a 31" tire until i get an axle swap in. just cuz i know i drive my jeep into the ground
I wish they had a smilly that had my head hang low for saying that. I think im trying to convince myself that i would be ok.

Short time.... Mine broke second trip out, left me stranded a state away from home. Worst part is it broke before I even got to the obstacle, I was just letting the clutch out to ease forward to get lined up......

My 35 broke last winter while it was 25*F below and all I was trying to do was back outa my parking spot up at my school. And I was only running 31"s and do light wheeling at times.
I don't trust them much at all. But I'm a college student that is waiting for my Mig to come so I can try to locat a new axel. I had to replace the 35s unfortunatly because I had to get home somehow.
There good axels if you plan to run stock tires, no lift, and keep to roads. But I know I would have never bought a jeep if thats what I was planning to do.
