View Full Version : Radiator tranny cooler vs aftermarket

My question is should I use the radiators tranny cooler or route the lines to an aftermarket unit.

I live in upstate NY and have always used synthetic ATF. I know some of you will tell me to use the radiator as this will also heat the tranny fluid in the winter months, but since ATF is much thinner than engine oil I didn’t think it would make much difference. I have also heard that the fluid coming out of the torque converter is approximately 200 deg F and thought that if that were true then it should help warm the ATF.

I have always read that the number 1 cause for premature tranny failure is heat, if that is the case then why would I want to run my ATF through a radiator were at best it may only get cooled to 160 deg

Any input as to what approach is best would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Bill

I first run the fluid (from the transmission) to a "T'" for the temperature sending unit (solder a ground wire ito it).

Then the fluid goes to a manifold style cooler mounted in front of the radiator After that it goes to the add-on filter.

And then to the B&M cooler.

I mounted the transmission gauge in the center console.

IMO, you do want the fluid going through the radiator cooling/heating port...HTH
