so im leaving for college in about 4 weeks and my jeeps battery is starting to cop out. its 50,000 miles and 6 years old so its time anyway. Im tempted to buy an Optima yellow top because it is such a perfect battery for what i need but the price tag doesnt justify it right now. Sadly i wont have my rig for my first year. What are some suggestions.

are you having problems with the battery now? if not, i'd use it a little longer.. why get a new battery and let the jeep sit for the better part of a year?

no need to buy a new battery if it's just gonna sit for a year..perhaps "borrow" a battery for now and then the owner can have it back when you leave..good luck

thanks ohio. Yes im having problems now but i have a battery charger so i just charge it overnight and then it runs in the morning but if i dont charge it then it wont start. I didnt see the practicality (if thats a word) of buying a battery and then leaving it but my dad wants it fixed up and cleaned before i leave for school.

Sorry if that was bad information but I thought you were supposed to use distilled water, on electric forklifts thats the case. Good luck.

*jumps out from lurking*
I just went through this last week, my battery was totally dead and I'm still undecided on what to do with my jeep yet. I found a small local battery shop here in town and they had factory blemish batteries for 30 bucks and the one I picked up was a little more powerful than stock. It might not be the best battery in the world, but it gets me rolling around the driveway while I do repairs and so I can move it to mow without going through the hassle of jumping it.
Might be worth a quick google or something.

DO NOT put water in your battery......
If your battery is low on acid, go spend the $5 for a large bottle of battery acid from the parts stores, they all carry it.

Never add battery acid if the water level is low. When electrolyte is lost, the water evaporates, while the acid remains in the battery. Adding acid alters the chemical composition of the electrolyte and can cause the battery to fail sooner. Electrolyte should be added only after an accidental spill...

Well I learned something. I already knew you where supposed to add distilled water if adding water, but I was always told to put the acid back in it.
