So I'm heading out in a couple weeks with some buddies for a little trail ride, nothing over the top, just something off the beaten trail at a small off roading park not far away. The last time I went i just kinda stuck my dad's old CB on the passenger's lap and said "hold this" and zip tied the antenna to the roll cage. This time I'd like to actually go ahead and get my own CB set up and mount it. So, I'm looking for something that is cheap but not crap and where to put the radio in my YJ as well as where to mount the antenna. Here is what I've been looking at.

antenna mount: http://www.quadratec.com/products/16180_01.htm

radio: http://www.quadratec.com/products/96080_90.htm

and antenna: http://www.quadratec.com/products/96080_91.htm

As for the inside of my YJ, I have the stock A/C unit and a VDP center console.

I was gonna post the picture of mine next to the ashtray, but I see you have A/C.

My CB died and I ended up getting a used Cobra handheld off of Ebay (http://cobra.com/products/handheld-cb-radios/hh-38-wx-st-hand-held-cb-radio-with-weather-soundtracker). I haven't used it much, but I am happy with it so far. I'm only going to be using it when going offoroad, so it's good enough for me and plus, I'll be able to clean up some wires in the Jeep.

My suggestion - the Cobra 75 WX ST

I've had mine for about 4 years now. Works great on the road and trail.
Plenty of power for how/where we run. I have a second connector box for my truck.
Easy to "secure" - just unhook from the connector and lock it up in the Tuffy console.
Has a connection for an external speaker which is very helpful in the Jeep.
And it has the NOAA weather band radio - useful on the trail (at least where we wheel)
Get a good Wilson or Firestick antenna and have everything tuned.

I paid $80 for mine radio. Seen them on sale a few places for $75 to $100

I have the Cobra 75 also I've had it for about 6 years now and no problems, and I found out that you can plug the external speaker port into the AUX port on my stereo and use the speakers that way.

I'll look into the Cobra, but i like the Uniden because its small and cheap and I've heard its a good radio for what I'm looking for. The other question I had is where to mount the radio inside the Jeep?

The Cobra 75 has a small box that is hardwired to the antenna, power and external speaker.
I have mine mounted under the cupholder on my Tuffy console. You can stick it about anywhere - behind the dash, in the glovebox, whereever...
Just attach the pigtail from the handheld to the box and you're good to go.

I've been able to get several miles of coverage out of it when I use it on the highway in my truck.

The most important thing to do is have the antenna tuned when you get it all installed.

can you tune your own antenna or do I need to bring it somewhere to do it?

From the FAQ section of the board.

We have a radio nut in our club. He has a bunch of nice equipment/meters/etc...
We have him tune us up for a few beers.

Or find a local CB/radio shop/truck stop - they will probably charge you $5 or $10.
May be cheaper than buying a meter you will use once or twice...

I say go with the cheapest radio that works, you only need to talk to the guys that are right there with you really. I mounted my $25 Midland to the front of the factory console. I'm not sure if the shifter would clear in a manual though.

I have allways taken out the 2 screws in the windshield frame (footman loop)
and bent a braket to fit my CB. It's up high so you can hear the CB. I've allways had my CB in the same spot. CJ, YJ,TJ.
