bad shock?

so i was wheeling a couple days ago and i heard a pop and realized that my shock had ripped the heads of the screws off on the top bracket. I wasn't to mad because i got them off with some vice grips but i took the shock off to look at it and it wont spring back up when i depress it all the way. has the shock gone bad?

Im going to agree to getting a bigger lift but the money isnt here right now so i cant. They are skyjacker nitros and are made for a 2" lift. Would y'all recommend that you get shocks longer than your lift height is just for better articulation so you wont fully extend them?
