I have an engine, 4 cylinder Willys L-head (flat head) engine, I need shipped to my house from another house ~600 miles away. The 450 lb engine will be strapped to a pallet. Has anybody done this before?

Just looking for input, suggestions, ideas that are workable.

Thanks,
Rit

You could also try one of these;

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/3A084?Pid=search

It uses plastic strapping. But for a one time use, go to a new car dealership parts dept and ask them for a favor. They use them all the time to strap blocks and trannys to ship out. Need to be careful, I've broken palletts before getting them to tight...

Depending on the weight you can try greyhound or another source is www.uship.com where they act as a broker for you and the company or individuals bid on your item to be shipped. You can also place an add on craigslist or one of the many Jeep sites and see if anyone is heading up your way and has room for an engine. The old 4 cyl engines can't be that heavy unlike the big block I have in my Mustang which weighs a ton.

Good luck

I've shipped LOTS of stuff using Forward Air. Strap whatever you want to a pallet and ship it away... It's a terminal to terminal service so it's cheaper then door to door services. Check their website to see if they, and you, have a terminal in your area.

If you want Rit.. I have a 69 302 w/ Explorer 5.0L upper and lower intakes I'll ship ya. ;)

If that's not good enough.. I also have a 5.8L EFI V8 and a Ford ZF tranny that'll make that little rig of yours go ANYWHERE. Especially with the granny gear and OD. But, you may have to stretch your wheelbase to at least 108" though. :D

I ship Trade show materials all over the US and internationally.

I suggest crating, if that is not an option, then use a skid but add a 3/4 ply floor and block it in place (bolt it down using the motor mounts) I'd still use either plywood or heavy cardboard ( Washing machine carton or the like cut down to fit)

Write Dimensions on the side, bold letters ... Length ,width & height plus weight.

The first company I use is "Service By Air" call them with your Dimensions and ask for a quote....
Course I ship ALOT and very often very heavy, "Service By Air" is my best vendor.
Some times Fed/Ex Ground Logistics for shorter runs.

DO NOT use Carolina Trucking

One other option is call an independent trucker, see if he/they have a designated load going to or through your destination, see if they have a short load and may have room on the trailer. The issue here is though is loading and unloading they charge $$$ if they have to wait..(Folk lift , etc )
