I'll admit, I'm never done much work on engines and don't know much about them.

What exactly is a flywheel and how hard are they to replace?

The flywheel is the plate between the engine and the transmission. It is bolted to the engine side of the two. On a manual transmission the flywheel is the piece that the clutch grabs onto to connect the transmission and the engine to make the vehicle move. The flywheel is also geared alone the outer edge. This gear is the gear where the starter gear connects to to turn the engine over when starting the vehicle. In an AT vehicle i am not sure of its purpose besides being a gear for the starter to turn the engine from. In either type of veh (AT or MT) the tranny must be removed in order to remove the flywheel

Automatic transmissions have flex plates (not flywheels). In an automatic transmission the torque converter bolts to the flex plate (its how the motor is attached to the transmission in this case).

Its one of those things, drive me nuts when people call them fly wheels. Sort of like when I use ECM instead of PCM around Knuckelhead. :D
