You don't mention if it is a B5 or B6, diesel or gas ...
I know that the B5 diesels have an issue with something called the balance shaft module, and that many people recommend staying away from these.

what i do know.
there are sometimes issues of cars with random fit/finish quirks. if its used and is already 2 or 3 years old, those isues will often be apparent. if the CEL is on... have it checked thoroughly before purchase. twice.

Lori and I test drove a 1.8T a few years ago, and i was impressed with the power, the smooth response and the fact that the car really demonstrated no lag at all. the only reason why we didnt get the car is Lori didn't want to pay for premium. the fact that the gas mileage would have more than made up for it didn't matter to her at the time.
