Where in Canada are you from? I'm just 2 hrs north of Toronto, and I just ride the trails in the bush, which is pretty cool, because we have a lot of trails to ride near Georgian Bay.

Ok....here I am reading the Canadian posts and wondering when one of you are going to talk about places to wheel in Canada. I am north of Montreal for the next few months and would love to hook up with a few folks to whell with. I don't know the rules for off-roading in Canada and I refuse to hit the trail alone.
So, now you got a Texan putting the challenge to you..."Where the hell you boys wheel at!"?
By the way, "boys" is a non-gender specific Texas term! ;)

Well in Windsor there isn't anywhere. There use to be but know they put up fences and cement blocks and the police patrol it. So it's pretty boring here. We all use to go to the states and screw around there. At that time I was just a passenger. Now I have my own. So who wants to go?????

Hello from Vernon, BC.
Too much wheeling to do it all in one lifetime around here.

There's a place in Michigan called the Mounds (located in Mt. Morris). If you check out Michigan Jeepers (http://www.michiganjeepers.com) they usually have a run going every week or so. So maybe I'll see you up there, if not maybe in a Windsor bar :D :D

The mounds in Michigan is the best place around Windsor to offroad.

Almost all of Northwestern Ontario is a great place to wheel. Just pick a dirt road off of the highway, or a powerline, or hook up with someone local who might know some special areas.
I wouldn't exactly call the area pristine, but the words forsaken, forbidding, and tractless come to mind as ways to describe it.
Hint: When driving along the highway, if you see a sideroad with no sign, or mailbox... it's probably a great place to go.

I have tried that method before. My mom kinda got mad a bit when me and my dad were supposed to be home for dinner, well we did get home and did have dinner, COME ON we were only 2 hours late and it was for a good reason (turned out we drove 45mins down a 1 way road, lol)

Nice area out that way guys.. also good to see some more canadians on here...
I was out in Atikokan for a stretch about 15 yrs ago.. nice area.. Used to swim in Nym Lake every summer.. that and Turtle Lake.... Wouldnt mind being back that way but I dunno.. TBay is supposed to be the highest stolen car rate in canada... whats that make you think of as far as the jeeps? :D
4plugz
07-08-2003, 10:02 AM
The theft rate is news to me, but it could be true. I run soft top in the winter, and bikini all summer, never lock the doors and my jeep is always there. The kids in the neighbourhood tend to empty the contents of the vehicle (stereo, change, cd's, etc) but leave the vehicle itself.
Personally, I love NWOntario, and T-Bay is like a really big small town with good shopping (2 CT stores) smile.gif
Atikokan?? You a miner?

But we did hit Steep Rock alot for swimming and such.. My aunt lives in TBay still ... although I am not sure what last name she goes by.. She's still just "Aunt Joanne" to me but her and my uncle split and I never remember her maiden name... She's got a place up there with a friend of hers named Sherri Frenette...

Man.... first Atikokan, then Kap... You're more of a northerner than I am.
The name you listed is unfamiliar to me, so the odds are good that I don't know you're aunt, but depending on your age, we may know some of the same people because I know some folks from Atichokan, and the wife is from Fort Frances.
That's neat... small world huh?

That's neat... small world huh? Small world indeed... Got a number of people we've met over the years from out your way... Sherri is from FF.. knows my fiancee's step mom Jan Easter also from FF... a guy down the road went to school in Atikokan a year or so behind me .... The north is definitely nice. Much better than being down here in the Rust Belt. Now if only I could find a good paying job I'd be back up that way.... (At least during August, when the black flies and `squito's are minimal..read: less than 1500/sqft)

Probably some connections somewhere.
As to the bugs, they're much worse this year than I've ever seen them. Went out wheeling a couple weeks back, and the Jeep filled up with them every time I stopped. Not so many mosquitos, but blackflies galore.
You ain't missing much at the moment, but if this weather keeps up, the fall is going to be awesome.
Out of curiosity, does the mud down there compare to "loon sh1t"?

To be honest, I can't remember much of the Atikokan-TBay run... is it a lot of rock? I know the lakes are horrible for submerged treestumps and shallow rock areas.... not nice for outboards with expensive props....
Really, there are some good trails down here but I am thinkin Sudbury is where its at...

I was thinking of the muskeg aka loon poop, but yes, the lakes are indeed brutal for everything.
The run between T-Bay, and Attikokan is typical Canadian Shield.... rock covered in trees, with bottomless muskeg bogs. With the looonnngg history of logging, so the entire area is a crosshatch of logging/mining roads. Most of the good areas are easily accessible, and are open to anyone (still).
I love it here.... I feel at home here.

Insurance companies don't seem to like paying out claims on buried vehicles. lol
As to the work situation, with the forestry industry taking the beating that it is, there are a lot of us who may have to leave "home" just to support our families. It's kinda like Atikokan when the mine closed, but the trees are still here so we're keeping the faith (people need houses).
Besides, this is like an extended holiday that I otherwise wouldn't have the seniority to get :D

Well .. just back from a vacation/drive to TN and let me tell you... I am definitely wishing there was more work in the southern US... some beautiful country down there.. but everywhere seems to be feeling the same stretch that you are out in Tbay... gotta wonder if we're headed for a depression again

I agree with the beautiful scenery dude. I rode my bike down to Arizona about 8-9 years ago, and it was a breathtaking experience. Just the changes in the landscape were enough to keep my head turning side to side.
As to economics, it seems that all of North America is in the grip of a major recession, with no end in sight.
Glad you had fun on your trip.

It is nice to see I am not the only one with the almost uncontrollable urge to veer off the side of the road and go exploring when I see something like that!
The only thing that stops me is that I am usually alone :(

That's actually how we find our trails... If one of us happens to be driving along, and sees something, and we have the time, we drive it until it either looks like a long road, or until it gets interesting... then we return en masse to explore. Find lots of interesting stuff that way.

I don't know if you could tell, but this section doesn't get used much. People usually stick a couple of posts in, then either leave, or use the more common off-topic, and tech forums.
I check it now and again just out of curiosity.
Sorry to hear about your problems with Jeepkings... perhaps you could try http://www.universityofjeep.com it is a board located in southern Ontario (like Jeepkings), and many people post on both.
BTW, jeep wave from Thunder Bay!

Hello fellow Canadians!
I'm originally from Windsor, Ontario, but I reside in Indiana now. I know just how friendly Canadians are and when we played in a softball tournament up in Barrie over the labour day weekend the Americans I went up there with couldn't get over the hospitality and how friendly everyone was.
I never had a chance to do much 4 wheelin when I lived there, but I hope to when I get back for visits to see family and friends.
Have a few cold ones for me.
