We are taking a little camping/ wheeling trip to George Washington National Forest. We will be camping right off of the trail, so bring whatever water and food/ supplies you'll need. Most trails can be run in a stocker, but most set-up rigs have fun also. Trails included will be Dictum Ridge, Kephart Run, Dry River Run, and a run to the Top of Flagpole Knob and Meadow Knob, (at 4000 feet you can't beat the view.) :eek: smile.gif

We are looking at the weekends of either December 8 and 9 or the 15th and 16th. depending on everyone's availability and schedules. :D

Let me know what's good for you folks. smile.gif

I have wanted to go on a ride with you guys for a while now, but I'm always busy on the weekends you go. This time MAY be different. I get home from school on the 14th, so I might possibly be able to go on the 15th and 16th. I'll check it out...

I also know of 4 other Jeeps that would be able to make the weekend of the 15th and 16th, so it'd be great if you went that weekend.

Give me some details on the GWNF....
Is there an admission fee?
Where about's is the GWNF? (how far from Harrisburg Pa.)
Sounds good....I may make it, depending on when you decide to go and if I can find some others to tag along!

Nope. It's all free. You just drive off the highway and you're there.

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Where about's is the GWNF? (how far from Harrisburg Pa.)<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Well, we are 2 hours south of Harrisburg, Pa, here in Annapolis. And GWNF is four hours southwest of us, but straight line from your place, 3-4 hours, maybe :confused:
The area we are heading to is about 10 miles west of Harrisonburg, Va. Mapquest says about 3 hours, 18 minutes from Harrisburg, Pa. smile.gif

BRACE FOR IMPACT . . .

Uhhh, we're looking at meeting at the 66 rest stop at 7:30am, and meeting at McDorman's store at 10:00am.

Ideally, I would like all of us to run up Old Log Run, to FDR 72, down Second Mountain to Rt 33. We're gonna run down 33 to Dry River Run, and camp along the stream. Then Kephart Run is right across the road, so we can do a run up there smile.gif . THEN, if everyone is interested, we can do a night run up to the top of Flagpole Knob. Just a plan . . .

;)

OK Chesapeake... sounds great. Not sure exactly on that number of people comin with me. I have two questions, though:

1) How many people do you guys usually have in your Jeeps with you and why that number?

2) Are we keeping this Jeeps only, or if my friend can come with his Dodge Ram, would that be OK. It's up to you guys, I'm just wondering.

Thanks, and I can't wait til that weekend, it's gonna be real cool!

-That +2 means 2 extra vehicles from around here, not people. (I took my backseat out a long time ago smile.gif )

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>2) Are we keeping this Jeeps only, or if my friend can come with his Dodge Ram, would that be OK.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Yeah that's cool. We have a good friend of ours bringing his toyota, and another guy bringing his isuzu p/u. Warn your friend that some of the trails are tight and he may get some natural pinstriping from some bushes and trees. We took a fullsize dodge w/ about 8" and 38's throught those trails though. smile.gif Made it interesting :D :D

Hey Hubdeep,
Is this a Maryland only ride or can I post a link over to DEJA?

From what I understand, the Rt. 33 end of Dictum Ridge has been tank-trapped before you get to the step obstacle. Apparently you can come DOWN to the steps but cannot exit to Rt 33, you'd have to turn around and go back up - not easy for a stocker, assuming they even left a turn around spot...

See:
A site showing the rocks at the Rt 33 end of Dictum Ridge trail (now closed) (http://users.erols.com/bartab/dictum_ridge_4_99.html)

When we went up the Rt. 33 Side, we had one little turn around a couple dozen feet before we got to the stair steps. If they put the tank trap close to the steps, you could be in a pickle. For what it's worth.

For Flagpole Knob, you can go up from Skidmore Dam/Dunkle Hollow (near the Dry River, Rt 33) or from FR 225. The Skidmore Dam/Dunkle Hollow side is totally a 2WD trail.

In my opinion, the FR225 side is more interesting. FR 225 is no challenge at all except the one spot where there is a rock hill on the side that you could try (if you wanted). Further up, the FR225 ends and a sharp left puts you on a trail with one downhill (with bypass) that is pretty easy, and a nice ride along the ridge-top, complete with one rocky climb and one optional rock obstacle to the side.
See
Flagpole via FR225 (http://whitemetal.com/offroad/flagpole_knob/index.htm)
and
Flagpole Knob via Skidmore Dam/Dunkle Hollow (http://whitemetal.com/offroad/dunkle_hollow_092301/index.htm)

Yes ppro you have your info correct.

Dictum Ridge is now similar to Kephart, a dead end entering from the bottom. Homeowners are building there and don't want the added trail traffic.

Have you traveled up Skidmore/ Dunkle Hollow where those little creeks sending water across the trail freeze? It is definitely not 2wd. I've seen folks locked f/r not make up there in the winter, ( true winter, snow and ice-not this 70 degree crap smile.gif ) Fr225 was gated when we traveled there last. Opened for hunting? Sounds good if it's open.

Are you coming PPRO?

ppro
12-05-2001, 12:00 PM
FR225 was open when we went, and yes, that was during Bear pre-hunting season. But I think hunting season is now so you should still be OK.

Dunkle Hollow/Skidmore will probably be about the same as I found it since there is no water to speak of out there. I know the crossing you're talking about, but I am surprized anyone would have trouble with it - even if there was water in it. Remember, there are fresh bulldozer tracks out there so my guess is the "trail" has been "fixed" since you went... :-(

ppro

P.S. It is highly unlikely I will be out there as I have other things I need to be doing that weekend. If I happen to go I will try and get in touch but don't wait for me!

If everyone could do me a favor and post where you are going to meet the group, I'd really appreciate it. I don't want a straggler to get lost. TIA

* Park-n-Ride at rt424 and rt50 (Md-6:15a)
* Rest Stop on I-66 (Va-7:30a)
* McDorman's Store (Va-10:00a)

Islander90

Well, I'm still not completely sure on how many vehicles are gonna be from my group of friends. My friend's Jeep isn't working well right now and he doesn't want to blow his head gasket (rightfully so :D) and I haven't talked to my friend with the Dodge Ram yet, but he probably will not drive. I also have 2 college buddy's Jeeps coming. So, my Jeep will meet you at the Rt 66 rest stop. If any of my friends from home come too, they will be with me. My college friends will meet us at McDorman's store. You think you can get me directions from I-33 to the store so I can tell them?

Thanks!

We'll be on CB channel 7. When folks get to H-burg, I 'll be calling around to find out who's in town.

McDormans is on the left side of 33, (when you leave Harrisonburg, route 33 becomes Rawley Springs Pike), about 10 or 12 miles west of Harrisonburg. 33 does a little right, left, left, right thing around town hall in the center of Harrisonburg. If your not paying attention, you end up real lost. McDormans is easy to miss if theres not a bunch of Jeeps or other trucks sitting in the lot. 2 white buidings sitting close to the road, one has a couple of gas pumps in front of it, and the other looks like the White House with little white columns in front.

***UPDATE:

Cold weather. Pack warm. Fire ban should be lifted by then.

Roster:
Me + RSQJEEP + 2 friends
Islander90 + 2
Joker
Beetle
kotacj
Arya Ebrahimi (JU)
armentdw (JU)
Ray H (JU)
MAckrmnn (JU)
punkin (JU)
Kerr (JU)
Reuben (JU)
Dust Puppy (JU)

. . . and maybe a couple of locals from around here.

Again here are the meeting spots for all interested:
* Park-n-Ride at rt424 and rt50 (Md-6:15a)
* Rest Stop on I-66 (Va-7:30a)
* McDorman's Store (Va-10:00am)

We'll wait approx 5-10 minutes after those times for any stragglers. I'll be driving a red YJ with license plate "HUBDEEP". We'll be on CB channel 7 around H-burg.

I am planning on running Old Log Run from the bottom to FR 72. Over to Second Mountain, then down to 33. Travel west to Kephart. I think it'll be around 3-4pm, (getting dark in the valley), so we'll camp on Kephart near the middle by the big set of tall pines. After we set up camp, we can travel the rest of Kephart and maybe dry river for a night run. Sunday morning we'll go up to Flagpole by way of FR225, then come down by way of Skidmore fork. We'll get some pictures at the lake and then get on the road hopefully by 4-5pm, (Ravens and Steelers play at 8pm Sunday night :D :D).

Any more Q's or P's drop me a line.

Prepare for the cold! But be ready for a raging fire smile.gif . . .

Hey! Looks like I might be able to swing out there Sunday. Where can I meet you guys for Flagpole? I'll be driving from the Metro DC area so it's a 2.5 hour haul for me. The earliest I can be out there without hurting myself is about 9am. Is that early enough for you?

BAD NEWS :( :(

Driving to work today my tranny blew up. :mad:

I'm going to do what I can to tear it apart tonight and tomorrow. But I won't be meeting you guys Saturday morning. I feel bad I put this whole thing together and now can't go. The meeting time is still 10:00 am for Saturday morning at McDormans store in Rawley Springs. Folks planning to meet at the rest stop on 66 should just plan on meeting at McDorman's.

Look for red_ranger and armentdw from the JU board. They graciously said they would take folks around Saturday and Sunday, (since they are locals smile.gif ).

Sorry again, but I'll try and meet you guys Saturday afternoon. smile.gif

So everyone, are we still doing the meeting at the Manassas rest stop of Rt 66??? It would be nice, just because I have never made the drive out there. I would be fine, but it's always good to have that extra safety of another vehicle. If not, I will see everyone at McDorman's store. Keep me posted.

Chesapeake... good luck fixing that tranny! Hope to see you sometime Saturday, then.

It was awesome and I plan on going back whenever I have the time. Chesapeake, Daniel was a great guide and has an awesome XJ. Sorry to hear about your tranny, but hopefully you get it fixed.

I can't wait to get back there again after I mess around with my suspension some. Learned the extreme restraints of sway bar and track bars. We shall see.

Even if I didn't meet as many Q'tec people as I thought I was going to, thanks for the invite. I had a great time!!

I took pictures but haven't developed them yet and don't have a scanner anyways. There was a guy there with a video camera taking still pictures and he will be sending them out in a few days. I will post them whenever I get them.

Habo - I see you're in DC. That's about 20 minutes from me. You know of any good places to wheel around here. The GWNF is about 2/2.5 hrs away, and that's no good for a quick 4wheeling thing. It's more of a weekend trip which is why this was great. Know of any places???
