A friend of mine had the front wheel bearings seize on his XJ.

He is having trouble removing the hub to get to the wheel bearings and has asked me for help.
He said he checked the Chiltons manual, but it was of no help at all.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the hub assy in order to change the wheel bearings? Thanks.

impact gun and socket best way I have found.. one I done broke over a 12 socket ext. without getting it loose. broke in loose only a 1/2 impact wrench first try.( My 90 XJ) the other was on a newer jeep(97 TJ) came loose with a 1/2 braker bar and socket.

Remove the axle nut. Remove and set asside the
brake calipers (I set them on the lower control
arm). Remove and set asside the rotor.
Behind the hub there are 3 bolts which hold the
hub to the steering knuckle. The hub is a good fit
to the knuckle and it may take abit of doing to
get them apart.
Pull new hub out of box and reverse proceedure.

The bolts which hold the hub on
are abit different. They are reverse torks. I use
a 12pt socket to remove them.

Also, you might want to get a manual so you can
look at their R/R proceedure. I have a Hayes, but
a Chiltons or Factory service manual are real
good options (esp. last one).
Good Luck!

The three bolts holding the unit gearing ARE 12 point bolts, not torx. Remove the three bolts and replace them with reg. hex bolts. Thread in the hex bolts 1/2 way then tap out the assy. from the back with a hammer by hitting the bolts. I always coat any contact points with grease before reassyembly.

My wife's '89 XJ had the front bearings sieze.....
I took off the hub, and took it my local shop and
they pressed new brgs. on for $40 labor. I supplied
the new ones and they gave me back the old ones. I
know it doesn't match what everybody else says, but
some xj's can be replaced while others have to replace the whole hub.
