Well my brother has smoked his R&P on his 87 2WD MJ. My question is where is the best place to get deals on one, and will the ring and pinion from a Cherokee work? I know nothing about there interchangability.

I need to find the best deal as my brother doesnt make a whole lot of money and this is his only mode of transportation. thanks.

D35 rear axle same as the Cherokee of that year.
Check your local salvage yard. It's likely they have a MJ there for you to take the axle from.
I'd be suprised if they would want more than $100
for it.

As long as they're from the same axle, they'll work fine. in '87 a factory D44 was available for both MJ and XJ,.

You can't however swap the entire axle from an XJ into an MJ (unless you want like a 4" rear lift) becasue the XJ is SOA and the MJ is SUA.

Yeah me and him had discussed that already Sean. he said he wants it SOA just not right now cause he doesnt have the money for the front springs or the trac bars or anything like that so i am going to try and find him another axle or just a good deal on a new ring and pinion. Thanks again.

One key note. I belive the (or "a") D44 in the MJ was known as a "metric ton" unit. Not sure if internals are different ot not, but I recall hearing that certain items were not compatible on that particular axle. I know this doesn't help..... but it doesn't hurt to have ideas. smile.gif
