I want to put one or two subwoofers in my 92 YJ. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions about where to place a speakerbox, other than behind my backseat. Anyone have a sub's in their Jeep that can give some advice?

..........and so.... the first post MOVED to the "new" Electronics forum. :D
As far as "custom" goes, there are not a whole lot of options. I think Tuffy is manufacturing a console that accepts a Sub. There is another manufacturer that offers a console with a sub and amp installed.
If you want to go full costom, there are people that have had the bottom seat cushion in their rear seat replaced by a custom boz shaped nearly the same as the seat cushion, and then recovered in the seat fabric. Hard seat. Seen it on other forums. Two 10s fit in it, but you must consider things when doing this.
If you are building/purchasing an enclosure first, you must then search for a sub that meets the specs of the enclosure and the power in which you wish to feed it, at the price you can afford. OR. You can find a sub that is the price you want, the freq response you desire, the power rating you want and that has the capability to fit a tight enclosure. Then you must build to suit the speaker.
Which is better?
If you buy the box first, you might play heck gettin the speaker to sound right. If the airspace isn't "right", you may need it ported, which raises newer issues of wether or not the sub you get will work ported.... or not just work but actually be efficient.
Dang. i made this way more complicated.... :D :D

For subs I would just put em behind the backseat. You could mount the amp under the rear seat. I've got 12's in my mj but my only option was behind my seats.

I got rid of backseat and mounted a single 12" into 1/2 of a Tuffy rear storage box mounted where backseat was. Used the other 1/2 for amp and still have good secure storage there. Have to build it tight and seal it really well - sheet metal is not an ideal speaker box material.

I've always wondered if I could install 8in subs in the empty space behind the rear wheel wells, the only thing I can feel in there is brake wires.

You have a couple of issues there. One if you plan to go free-air, you would have to expect the sub to withstand the elements. Ain't gonna happen.
If you enclose the area, then it will have to be either bonded or welded. Either of which is extremely complicated processes. If welded, then the body will have to be painted. If bonded, then all the surfaces will have to be cleaned.
If you plan to go offroad, then you have condsider clearances.

I just took out the back seet and then you have plenty of room for whatever you want to put in there. I mounted the amp onto to the back of the consle, that way all I have to do to remove my dual bandpass box and put the seat in is unhook the speaker wires going to it. Works great.
