A friend gave us some cd's that he had burned and they will not play in our factory stereo ('00 tj). They work ok in my portable and our son's chevy. We have burned our own cd's in the past and had no problem with them. Does the factory stereo only accept certain formats? I know a lot of stuff is mp3 now adays and am not certain if there are others. How can I tell?? I know some of you are into music, can you help me?

Well, it is true that not all burned CD's will play in all CD players, but should for the most part in newer ones.

It may be that some brands are pickier than others.

If you know the brand of a CD-R that does play in your Jeep, try to burn your music CD's with the same brand and see if that helps.

I can vouch that the '00 stereo I had was picky. Pretty much random if it would play, other times it would play after 20 seconds, other times it would spit out out after 20 seconds.

I sold it for $170 on ebay almost a year and a half ago, and dropped an old Blaupunkt it it. Much better.

My '02 TJ had the same issues. Some it would play and some would only play if you didn't touch the "next track" or "fast forward" buttons. On those you were required to listen to the CD from start to finish, no skipping the songs you didn't want to hear at the time.

I just put a Kenwood in and will put in a CD changer that I have laying around.

I don't think you can even play music CD's on a CD-RW. I'd definitely go with CD-R's.

You can also try the CD-R brands that say made for music...

I had the same problem with the factory player in my '02 TJ. I did a LOT of experimenting with different CD-Rs and came up with 3 that always work perfectly: Memorex Black All-Use, Sony Audio (made in Austria NOT Taiwan, available at Wal-Mart), and TDK Music (only the ones made in Japan, NOT Taiwan, the packages look nearly identical). If it matters, these were all burned at 24x on a Gateway Computer using Nero software. Good luck!

You could just buy a MP3 player for the Jeep and be done with it. No need to worry about your CD collection getting ripped off. One CD could hold over 100 MP3s! (And if something does happen to it, just burn a new one.) smile.gif

You could also try a slower burn speed. Even though the writer may be rated 16x, 24x or higher, processor speed or available ram may be degrading the write. Try burning at 4x or so and see if you get a good cd.
