This summer I want to put two 10"s in the back (I have one now)but dont want to buy a box which will take up the entire back of my XJ, the plan is to build a box which will mirror the dimensions of the back of the seat. Longer and taller instead of wide. Is this difficult and how do I find out how big the box has to be. Not too technical on all stereo stuff but I've done my own install on everything on the jeep so I believe I'm up to even this. I'm not brand loyal either. TIA

the box has to go according to the amount of air the subs need to give the best bass output. check the subs specs for that info.
that way you wil l know what size to build the box to.

So you're wanting a wedge shape? It's not hard, basic high school geometry. It's kind of fun. You just have to do the math first, you can't just take off and start cutting.

you used to be able to get cubic inches requires for certain subs in crutchfield magazines...don't know if they have it online but I am sure they do...check it out
www.crutchfield.com (http://www.crutchfield.com)

then do the math like cornny says

When you build the box you should build seperate boxes for eace sub to it's specs. Then build the enclosure for the subs.... basically you don't want to have a huge box with more air than you need.. it will damage the speakers. I'm assuming this will be a sealed or ported box. Follow this link and you'll see 2 white subs.... it looks like they are hanging with all the room inside the enclosure but they really have a smaller box under them. kind of hard to explain without pics....

lots of 10's now will take a box as small as .4 ft3 so x2 = .8 ft. build it outa cardboard AFTER you buy the subs but BEFORE you build it outa mdf so you know for sure it has enough depth for your application. ..or you could get the sub dimensions from whatever brands website you go with so you don't end up w/ 2 subs you can't use. building it outa cardboard may seem like a pain but is soooo worth it in the end. and for what it's worth, there's over 2 ft3 behind the seat of an 02 tj. you should be fine for space even if you went across instead of verticalif you use ~23 inches across you'll get about 1.35 ft3(that's what i have) and still room for a pair of boots. kris
