View Full Version : CJ Stereo Options Brainstorming

Hi,

My CJ has been without tunes for sometime and I want to change that. I currently have a cheapie stereo in my dash in the original setup, but it is only a cassette player.

I want to add a CD player, but I've read all the posts with the problems with cutting the dash up. I cannot add a Tuffy middle console because of my custom rollbar/seat set up. This setup also rules out a Tuffy overhead console because my seats sit up a little higher which would cause my head to hit on the console.

What other options are out there that I'm not considering?

Here are some other facts to help in the brainstorming:

1. The ammo can that I use as middle console has room, but concerned about the angle of play and heat within the box.

2. Considering using Tuffy speaker boxes

3. I've read posts talking about using ammo boxes but not how to incorporate it/them in my current setup.

Any ideas or photos to help me solve this dilema will be much appreciated.

Thanks

JC

Check this site out, it's called Secret audio, You can hide the componets anywhere in the vechicle. A lot of hot rods and vintage cars use these when they want to maintain the factory stereo, but want modern sound.

How much room do you have under your seat? In my CJ5 I had my player under there, and for speakers I used the indoor/outdoor bookshelf speakers from Radio Shack. I mounted the speaker brackets just in front of the rear attach point for the roll cage, and I'd simply dismount (simple thumb screw on each side) the speakers and stow them in my middle console.

PB, I do now. Thanks

Awshux, the speakers I had in the before removing them were set up like you mentioned. Probably works, but the speakers were such crap, even the garbage man wouln't take them.

Just curious, how did you adjust your stereo console while driving if it was under the seat? Did you preset it and then drove? It's an idea, but access would be key. Now that I think of it, a wireless or wired remote unit might work.

JC Yeah, I didn't adjust it much once I was moving. After a while, though, I got pretty good at adjusting it just by feel. A disclaimer, however: this was about 18 years ago, and it was a tape deck, not a CD player  . If I were to do it today, I'd still use the underseat area for a CD changer and mount a removable remote as you suggest above.

BTW, the Radio Shack speakers were very durable and sounded great. I just looked recently and they sell a more modern version of them today. They run about $100 apiece and weigh a ton, because they have a pretty hefty magnet in them. I don't remember the wattage, but I never had any problem hearing them with the top off! :D
