Not looking to buy, but was just wondering if they are out there. I would definitely look to buy one after my current one dies, but so far it is treating me well. Any idea on prices??
Anyone have one?? It's awesome to be able to put a couple hundred songs on a disc compared to the average of 12-15 or so on a standard music CD.
Thanks,
CM.

Thanks. Some of the prices weren't as bad as I thought they would be. I'd definitely consider one when I need it.

i have one in my CJ. its a SONY, and i hate it.
the idea is great, but the SONY sucks. anyways, they initially came out around 99 or so for $800+. i waited and finally bought mine for 300 in 2001.
it's also nice to keep MP3 discs in the jeep, so i don't have to worry about scratching them, losing them, etc.

JVC makes an excellent unit not too expensive either
I put one of these cd changers that plays mp3's in my center console CD Changer (http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-NSIbaAj0dSc/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=3&g=600&I=158CDX757M&o=m&a=0&cc=01&avf=N)

I have a MP3/CD player in my 2001 XJ--love it! The best investment I have made ever in a sound system. I have a JVC with flip-down front face that reveals the cd slot. It has a knob for volume but thats the only thing I don't like...had several friends whose volume knobs stopped working over time...hope the JVC does not. Just person preference. The MP3 function is wonderful--burn mp3s from you computer into folders on the disc and you can organize the songs by albumn, style, whatever...and the folder names and albumn names and song titles scroll across the deck when playing (you just have to label them through winamp song information).
Would highly recommend - spent $220 (circuit city will match crutchfield's price and match their wiring harness deal)

Cool, thanks for all the replies.
I Currently have a JVC head unit. I'm pretty sure it has hook-ups so I can add a changer on if I wanted, but right now it has the fold-down face with the hidden slot.
Thanks,
CM.

And i have to ask why you think they suck cause you didn't say. I have an AWIA MP3 head unit that has a face that folds in half to mask it and i LOVE it except for one big problem. It skips like most mp3 head units. HOWEVER Sony just put out it's skip free mp3 player about a year ago and it goes for 400 beans. And i can't stress enoughDON'T BUY CHEAP MP3 HEADUNITS because they WILL skip even worse.
If you want a cheap way around it buy a head unit with auxillary input and get a discman that playes mp3's. t just plug it into you unit and you have mp3 playback.

Thanks for the reply. I just put a bid on Ebay for a copmpatible disc changer for my head unit (JVC KD-SX770) which is discontinued, but they sill have a changer that will work.
I do have a MP3 player, but there aren't any aux jacks to hook one up.
Since I bid on the changer on Ebay, I'm gonna hold off on the MP3 stuff. I just wanted to know if they were out there and what they went for.
And I do agree, out of the Sony stuff that I have, they are very good, but I can't comment on something I don't have.
Thanks again,
CM.

i only said that my SONY stereo sucks. i've also had a POS Pioneer deck on my XJ.
SONY-
-has random audio glitches in reading CDs: audio CDs and MP3 CDs. it's not a skip, it sounds like a really loud scratchy noise, that is not on the audio track (i've checked my files on multiple computers, and had no problem)
-can't get the track names to show up. i've named the songs in winamp, itunes, you name it. edited ID3 tags. i've burned in ISO9660, Joliet, long file names, on a mac and a PC, and they still get truncated to the DOS 8.3 naming convention.
-takes WAY too long to start playing a song. most times 10 seconds seek time, but other times it will take 30 seconds and still not play. i end up ejecting the disc and having to try again.
-sound quality is good, but i'm just not impressed for the $300 i spent
-maybe it's cuz i bought it when MP3 mobile technology was rather new, and not fine-tuned enough yet. maybe i got a lemon. maybe the model i have sucks. i don't know.
PIONEER-
-the CD player (regular audio CD, not MP3) i had would randomly shut off for no reason
-it would not eject all the time. there would be times while i was at work that i'd run out to my jeep to grab the CD that was in the deck, and it wouldn't eject
-the biggest beef i have with Pioneer was their customer service dept. i had written a polite letter describing that i was very displeased with the quality of my particular deck. i expressed that i wasn't looking for any reimbursement or free repairs, but just wanted to bring it to their attention (it was past warranty, but still only 1.5 years old). i went on to say that i would never pay money for another Pioneer product, nor would i be paying to repair this unit, i would rather buy something new and not sink money into a POS (not in those words ;) )they replied with the name of a authorized Pioneer repair place in Denver and said they'd pick up the tab on the repairs, just to make me happy. SWEET! well, after all was said and done, i got a bill when i picked it up for $100+ (i can't remember how much exactly). it took about 2 weeks of calling the Pioneer CS dept, and talking higher and higher up the food chain for them to finally take care of what they said they'd do in the first place. had i known it would have ended up that way, i would have sunk $300 into a new deck and not dealt with all that BS for 2+ weeks.
as far as SONY goes for other products: i have heard great things about their televisions, and i wouldn't hesitate to purchase a SONY TV. i'm not dissing their whole product line, just the CD deck i have. i think they make way too many products to be experts in all the fields that they manufacture.
one last thing then i'll shut up- i have been VERY pleased with my Alpine unit that i had in the early 90's. i believe that for the next deck i purchase, i will lean strongly towards Alpine. FWIW

Hey CM.,
I have one in my car, soon to go into the CJ once I get a long enough antenna cable to reach my overhead console.
I see the brand arguements, but I got a Jensen!
I paid only $90 at Circuit City for it, plus they ran a free install deal.
If you want to know the model I'll write it down the next time I'm in the car.
Overall I have had zero problems with it, the sound is great. (At least as great as the MP3 quality when made)
Only downside is the face doesnt come off for security.
But, for the price I figured they could steal it a few times and I still be ahead! LOL!
Besides, here in Philly they usually don't steal Jensens!

I just installed a Blaupunkt San Jose ($159 scratch & dent from Crutchfield).
Gotta say, mp3 is the way to go. 8-10 CD's in one, good ID3 tag reads, scrolling title/artist/album.
Unless you're paying for an install, I'd strongly recommend Crutchfield. They'll include a custom wiring harness, adaptor plates (for mounting), and detailed instructions/schematics. Makes for great install experience (I did the whole multiple amp/super subs/20 speaker deal in my younger days, now I just want it to work).
