I just got my Uniden Pro510XL installed, I have a 4' Firestik II also. The guy (at the Radio shop) who tuned my antenna said I should be getting like 2-4 miles distance. Is this about right? How do you get more distance out of it?
Also what are some other channels that are commonly used besides 19?
Thanks, Dennis

Hey Dennis, stealing your thread, how much did your setup cost? I'm looking at getting a small unit like the one you purchased here before my trip to Tuttle Creek in March.

16 is used a lot. That is where you would find local people talking and not truckers. 9 is for emergences so don't use that unless you have one.
Channel 11 used to be the call channel for base stations like 19 is for mobile units.

Thanks, Dennis i used to get about 6-8 miles with an antenna on my dakota hooked to a cheap cobra 19 (i think it was a 19). that was on the highway in areas where there was few users. when a channel is buisy the range gets knocked down. im only getting about 2-3 miles in my jeep now.

You'll increase your range with a longer antenna.
I would say you could get 2 miles during the day when there is a lot of radio traffic and maybe up to 10 miles when it's clear and quiet in the middle of the night.
That's about all I can muster with my Uniden PC76XL, which has been tuned up. I have a 5' Wilson Silverload on my Mazda and range is about what I mentioned above. I had better range with the 102" stainless whip, but it looked a little ridiculous on a subcompact car.

On my truck I have a 108 inch steel whip and a cheap maxon cb and coyote hunting I can get up to 15 miles during the day. I have dual 4 foot whips and a cobra 21 on my jeep and only get about 2 miles if i am lucky, but if you are wheeling a buddy isnt very far away.
