i have a basic radio shack cb and 4' firestick mounted to my spare tire mount. after i moved my antenna from the rear bumper to the new mount whoever i'm talking to gets a loud squeal on their end when i key my mike. i can hear them just fine. all my grounds are good and the swr is good.(according to the guy at the local cb shop). i have the power for the cb running out of the switched wire coming out of the fuse box. any ideas? thanks in advance.

I was gonna say check the antenna ground(s). Make sure there are no breaks in the coax by doing a continuity test.
After that, I would say your mic or the mic wiring is messed up. Is this a brand new radio?

You might try running the wire directly to the battery and see if that helps.

the radio is about a year old and i had no problems until i moved the antenna. i'll try running it directly to the battery this weekend i guess.

It may be that you are finally getting out the way you should have but couldn't because of teh old antenna location.
Does the squeal happen when you are close to vheicles or all the time?
Try grounding the chassis of the radio.
Take a wire from a screw on the back or at least the side of the radio and run it to bare metal that has a good ground.
Do you have a Mic Gain, turn it down some when you are close to another vehicle.

it happens all the time. i'll try the grounding idea. can i use the same screw i have the ground wire running to out the back of the radio or should i use another location? thanks.

Well, it would take extra wire to do it and depending on how close the radio is to the antenna mount.
I would run a wire from the radio to a grounded metal and on the antenna mount run a separate wire from a hole in the mont to the frame. Run it with a little slack at the hinge to allow for the swing.
Before attaching the ground wires make sure you have bare metal, use external tooth s/s lock washers ( between the lug and the bolt, and the lug and the metal grounding point) and use ring lugs. Also, if you have any or can get some use a Non-Corrosive Conductive paste on the connections, helps a little with corrosion. I use a paste called No-Ox, I get it from an Electrical Outlet.

i was out there messing with it at lunch and i found that the cable insulation was cracked right where the antenna mounts and the cable was starting to corrode. went and bought a new cable. i'll put it in tonight and hopefully that was the problem.

Is the antenna mount metal and grounded to the body/chassis? If you mounted the antenna to plastic like a tail light cover, your antenna basically has no ground plane.
