I have been battling the same issue for a year. I narrowed it down to my ignition timing. I have a 87 also.

maybe new water pump is junk? Try it without the thrmostat and see if it runs cooler, if so then thermostat is JUNK..

You sure you have ENOUGH fluid in there?

Ya might be the wrong or messed up water pump.... or maybe you don't have the belt on it right...

If it's an 87 they are really prone to being small. So maybe a 6" coil conversion and some 36"s would fix the problem? If not I'm sure an Atlas II would cool it down.

Go here (http://images.google.com/imghp?tab=wi) and type in "jeep thermostat" & hit "enter". Viola! At least that's how I did it..... :D

White foam? Maybe your water pump is turning the wrong direction, as edudley previously mentioned? I've seen that before....

Many modern engines that use "serpentine" style belts are versions of older engines that used "V-belts" in their original design.

Pumps that are designed for "V-belts" may turn the opposite direction as the pumps designed for "serpentine" belts in some applications. The vanes of the impeller of one type of pump are angled in the opposite direction of the vanes on the other type.

Running the pump in a "backwards" direction would cavitate the coolant, possibly causing the "foam" that you are seeing.

If there is any question, I would remove the pump, and consult an experienced parts counter person. They could pull 1 of each pump out & compare them to the one you have.
