I know I am on the wrong side with this one but I need some help from wherever I can get it. I have a 95 XJ with a 4.0. All it does is turn over and does not fire. Heres what I have done so far. Cap rotor wires plugs fuel filter and a coil. I did a fuel pressure test and it was 40psi and then 30psi while cranking. I have 12 volts going to the coil but no spark (checked it many times). There appears to be left over wiring from an alarm system. Could something be messing with the ignition and fuel system? My other thought was the CPS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Dan

has it been running before and just started not starting?

So have you pulled a wire off to see if you have spark at that end?
The coil should have a constant 12-volts to it, which you already know, but the ground side needs to be pulsed for it to actually fire.
Fuel pressure sounds good, so I'd be looking at either the pick-up coil, or the CPS. If you have spark at the spark plug side, then the pick-up coil and CPS are doing their job, and its got to be timing related.

I have no spark at all. Which makes me think that its the CPS but don't want to go throwing money out the window without a second opinion. One other thing, the distributor bolt was loose but the distributor wouldn't move. It looks like there is a tab to keep it in place. The jeep should be home in a little bit and I plan on going through it agian. I died an hour away.

Sorry jaydog, yes it was running like a champ before it stopped running.

also I don't smell any gas. Wouldn't the engine flood like crazy with all of the cranking? The plugs are dry when I take them out.

I don't smell any gas.If the ECM isn't getting feedback from the CPS or pickup coil to pulse the coil, it isn't going to pulse the injectors.

Makes sense to me. Is there any way to test them without a computer?

Do you also think its safe to say that crappy under dash wiring from an old alarm and stereo install wouldn't effect the engine? There is alot of mess under there.

i bet it's the alarm system. it is made so that you can't start the car by bypassing it, so if some of the wires aren't connected, it will tel the ecm that the car is being stolen, and therefore won't let you start it.

Well I just finished gutting the alarm wiring and nothing. There is one funny solenoid looking thing that runs to the door light switch in the door jam. It is silver and gets hot as hell when the door is open for a while. Is that normal? I think I am going to suck it up and get the CPS and pickup coil.

I went and got the CPS and the pickup coil and sure enough it started right up. I think out of the 2 it was the CPS but better safe than sorry and one less run back to the parts store so I got them both. Thanks for your help.
