On my 90 yj, I had "Star bolts" which of course require "Star Sockets". Its the opposite of torx. The bolt head is male and the socket is female. about 10 or 12 mm

I've started to round off the heads so I quit until I can find the exact socket. Thinking out loud.....why can't they just use regular bolt heads anymore??? Thanks all for your help.

Torx bits only come in one size, not standard and metric. Torx bolts can be external torx, and use External Torx sockets, which are measured in E20, E25, etc. Standard Torx bolts, like whats in all the Jeep hinges, are measured in T20, T25, etc.

Some people mistake a 12-pointed bolt for external torx. A 12-point bolt just takes a 12-point socket or wrench and can be standard or metric.

However I've never taken out a Jeep starter with external torx bolts, they've all just been regular old bolts. The solenoid has external torx bolts holding it on typically, but those don't have to come out. So are you sure you are taking out the correct bolts? **Edit, apparently one of the people above did have a Jeep with the same thing you describe, so maybe I'm just lucky enough not to come across one of these yet.
