I would like to know how a 4.0L YJ with 5 speed drives with 33" tires and 4.10 gears? Gas mileage? I am looking at getting a set out of a 4 banger, i know the d35 is not that great but if the gearing is good then the rear will do well getting and welding a ford 8.8. most of my driving is on road :( and would like better gas than the about 10mpg i am getting now. what gear would you run?

I have a friend with the 2.5L YJ with 33's and I think 4.56s on the stock axels. He had to say good bye to fifth gear but he loves it. He gets about 18-20 MPG, so usually the 4L is about 1 MPG lower. but I don't know if its the same way when you start geting into bigger tires.

The rear won't last long with 33's on it. Driving on the street is actually harder on the rear diff than trail.
I ran with that exact setup till 'boom', which was less than a year, and only approx 6 months after hving the rear axle completely tore apart, cleaned and rebuilt with all new bearings, and spider gears.
As far as gearing, it's a bit under geared...will rev a little high at highway speed, but it's not terrible. I run 4:10's now with 36's and it's MUCH better, but now need more gear when on the trail. I have had a set of 4:56's sitting in my basement now for a couple of years...everything in time.

I have had the same setup for about 5 years now and all is good.
Gas mileage is crap, but I expected that. I have full use of 5th gear. I daily drove it for about 5 years.

I run 4.10s with 33s on a 6cyl. its great for driving on the road, but for offroad a little lower gear would be nice. when i first regeared (from 3.07 to 4.10) my mileage went from 13.7 to 17.3mpg. now its at about 15-16 because my jeep is a lot heavier now than it was back then

When on pavement, you get the most traction and this isn't what the diff wants as it corrects the wheel speed around corners.

There were times on the highway I couldn't use 5th gear, but it was a ton better than the 3.07s I had.

thanks for all the help, just a few more?
1. I read OhioYJ F.A.Q. and just would like to know why 4.56's better off road or mpg or best of both worlds
2. are 4.10s ok for towing little things like jet skis or should i stop the BS and man up and get the 4.56s
3. what kind of mpg do you get with 4.56
thanks again for all the help!!!! by the way ohioYJ your F.A.Q. is great its a big help!!

i towed a 700lb Harley to Ga and Fla a few times with my 33's on 4:10's. Wouldn't imagine a jetski would be any different. Not bad at all from what I remember...till that *&^%$#@ rear ended me.
I never paid any attention to MPG in the jeep so I can't help you there.
For wheeling, I have a 4:1 tera low kit installed, and the 4:10's do pretty well. Just certain situations I would have liked to have had slightly lower gearing. That's why I bought the 4:56's. Prolly also why I still haven't had them installed yet.
