i pulled the front carpet out of the jeep and there is a little surface rust. no biggie, but the passenger side was wet and it hadnt rained for a while. where do i need to check for the blockage/source of the leak?

Check under the hood. On the firewall, just to the passenger side of center should be a black tube about a foot long. Its the drain for the airbox on the cowl. If this tube gets clogged the airbox will fill with water and then drain down through the vents.

If that aint it, look at the windshield seal between the frame and body tub.

Or, did you spill a drink in there lately?

You made the first step- Yank out the carpet! Especially if you're running a soft top/soft doors. A good driving rain will find it's way in around the doors, and the carpet just holds the moisture. Might be a good time to consider Rhino'ing the floor.
