Hey guys i need some help. i am restoring a 78 cj-5. i seem to have a problem getting fuel to the carb. I have a clear inline filter between the pump and the carb and for a while it was not very full but now no fuel gets to it. i have replaced the pump , pulled the carb and cleaned it, dropped the tank and cleaned it, and replaced the sending unit. I can run the engine all day by feeding the carb gas directly. I have pulled the line from the tank to the pump and used a small can to draw from so i think i have isolated the problem back to the fuel pump again, which i already replaced. I made sure the arm is riding on the cam properly. any ideas/help?
Did you replace the fuel line between the tank and the fuel pump?????? It could be sucking a bad hose shut.

A couple of questions first. Did you blow out the gas lines? On the pickup tube in the tank dose it have a filter on the end? Did it run when you used the small can of gas? Did you check the gas line from the tank to the carb? Is the inline filter new? Sorry about so many questions just needed a little more info.

I replaced the entire sending unit. placed brand new filter on pickup tube. I blew out the gas line both ways. if i blow towards the tank it bubbles as it should. If i blow towards the carb air comes out the carb. It does not run on the small can of gas. fuel filter is brand new. no gas in the filter from the pump. When i get home today i am going to syphion the gas from the tank to the fuel pump maybe i just have vapor lock.

It sounds like you have done everthing right, like you said the new fuel pump could be bad. On the fuel pump take the bolts about half way out an then push down on the pump several times you should be able to hear the pump working. You could always put a electric pump on it with a switch that you could shut off if it flooded. Also GPER could be right it could be sucking the rubber hose shut. One more think are you sure the tank is vented but it should get gas for a short time.

I was able to use my back up fuel pump to draw from the tank to get the pump on the jeep primed. It runs like a champ now. thanks for the help guys.

Just a comment...I know the problem is solved...
GPER, I had that EXACT problem. I was off-roading, and 100 miles from nearest services. I thought my fuel pump was going, so I headed out through the desert on my own (letting my friends continue on the trip). It took me 9 hours to go 100 miles. I could not get faster than 2nd gear, when it would starve and die. 30 seconds later, it would start right up, I'd run like a bat out of hell till it died, and coast. Repeat. 9 HOURS.
Once I reached town I bought a low output electric fuel pump and fuel hose. I ran the fuel hose from my Gerry Can and got the rest of the way home. I now carry the electric fuel pump and hose with me at all times! smile.gif
