So my sister decided to be cool and by a 94' YJ 4.0L 5-speed...she didn't think it was neccesary to check the 4wd before she purchased it from the douche...its in good shape for what she bought it for but when i engaged 4wd it almost felt like it was stalling in a way, more when the wheel was turned. does anyone have any idea what this might be and any ideas on fixing it?

Is it making any funny noises? Sounds like something in the front axle. U-joints, gears?

You aren't referring to the sort of jumping feel that you get when using 4WD on dry pavement, while turning are you?

yeah but only when its in 4wd, sounds kinda like a pop but not constant...I have no idea what it could be...

Like OhioYJ said, does it do it only on pavement? If so, that jumping/stalling feeling is the reason why you're not supposed to engage 4wd and turn on a surface that doesn't give.

In other words, if it's happening on pavement, there's probably nothing wrong with the 4wd. At least, not yet -- keep doing it, and there will be.

Check the joints first. Then assuming the wheel joints look fine, with it in two wheel drive and the front axle off the ground, I'd rotate it once to make sure nothing is bound in the axle.

Transfer cases can make a loud "popping" noise when the chain is worn out, especially when under some sort of a load.

I have a feeling its the transfer case, It almost feels like the belt is coming on and off. I know the feeling when you take it on a turn when you have it on 4wd, and its not similar, its a loud popping noise and its right off the start. Ill take it on some sort of ground that gives, see if the results are similar.

Its the chain....i dont know how i would go about changing that sort of thing, something tells me its a little more complicated than changing your alternator belt...but hey its her jeep not mine! aaand where could we get a new chain? any websites available that will sell that part? thanks

get a new chain and i could help and i dont think dan would have a problem helping as long as he finds the time(with his busy jeep schedule right now). its a ton easier than you would think. we put an sye on my jeep earlier in the year and took us about 3 hours to take it all apart and put it back together, and that was the first time either of us has done it. talk to dan about it when you see him

oh yeah, np 231 chain from quadratec (http://www.quadratec.com/cgi-bin/sgin0101.exe?T1=52205+01&UREQA=1&UREQB=2&UREQC=3&UREQD=4&FNM=00&UID=2005100620161192)
