well, tonight i finally got fed up with not having a horn so i bought one of those classic ooooga horns, and that was a nightmare trying to hook up, and in the end the horn button didnt even work, plus i didnt like the horn at all. so im thinking about 1 tryin to figure out whats wrong with the stock one or 2 getting the la cucaracha horn.

my question here is, has anyones horn just crap out on them? i cant figure out what the problem was while the horn was still hooked up. i dont see a fuse for it, and the conection to the horn seems to be fine. can it maybe be something in the steering wheel? anyone have any suggestions.

also, anyone have air horns under the hood, like i mentioned above i like the la cucaracha air horns, but it comes with like 4 or 5 air horns and a compressor, just wondering how the hell that would all fit under the hood? (one of the horns is 13" long).

and lastly, just wondering what some of the major jeep message board sites are? something bigger then this one?

thanx
steve

I use www.michiganjeepers.com (http://www.michiganjeepers.com) all the time and we welcome out-of-staters.

Also check www.americanjeepers.com (http://www.americanjeepers.com) as they are setting up BB sites for all states.

Also try www.top4x4sites.com (http://www.top4x4sites.com) they have a big list of 4x4 and Jeep sites.

Just double check your connections, especially ground wires. I have two horns hooked up. One musical air horn and my regular horn. I hooked up the 2nd one next to the solenoid on top of the fender. Fits nice. (85 CJ7) Just drilled some holes and bolted it in.

I'm hooking up another toy this weekend. A dj bubble machine that spits out around a thousand bubbles a turn. It will spit out the rear.
Can you tell I'm running out of ideas? This Jeep is played on by many, including children, other than myself taking it out and ripping the heck out of the earth.

Good luck

A hot wire is one that carries electricity. Run a wire directly from the battery to the horn and see if it makes noice. If it does then the problem must be in the steering column. Most auto supply stores sell a horn button. It can be connected to the dash or steering column.

A word on air horns:

I put the "General Lee" dixie horn in my Challenger. It has five plastic trumpets that are nearly a foot long. What a PITA finding room for them all! I had to put three on the fender apron and two on the radiator support. This is in a vehicle with a little more room than a Jeep under the hood. I also had to get more plastic tubing to run air to the horns, because they don't give you much.

BTW make sure you oil the little compressor that powers the horns. If it goes bad, you got nothing.

With that said, I do enjoy using it at car shows and watching all the people come over asking "Wheres the General Lee?"

The purpose of th relay is to control the large power needed to blow the horn by using a low power relay coil activited by the button. One leg of the coil gets +12 all the time (or maybe only with the key on?). When you push the horn button, it grounds the other leg of the coil, which then energizes the coil, and closes the relays output contacts. Those output contacts have one leg going to the battery, probably through a fuse. The other leg goes to the horn itself. Anything in this chain that breaks makes a no-beep situation.

Hey, when you took off the horn button, did you have the silver spring loaded rod for the horn? I've got a 78 CJ7 that I am trying to replace the steering wheel on, and the new Grant Steering wheel and Kit has a electrical wire that seems to be needed for the horn.

My question is how do I connect an electrical wire to a mechanical horn set up like this?

Do I pull out the spring loaded road and somehow attach the electrical wire to the hole that's there?

My steering wheel is whacked and I just paid 50$ for a new one that just electrical.

Any help out there?

Thanks alot, as I'm just dumb founded and staring at the jeep right now.

Click on my sig. I have several forums listed in well my "forum" section.

I'd do like suggested. Run a wire red "hot" directly from your battery and heck even a ground "black" wire from your battery to see if the horn is dead. No sound replace horn.

If there is sound trace backwards. Fuse, switch or the horn relay coily thing.

Personally I'd stick with the stock horn unless it sounds wimpy, otherwise spend your money on something a little more productive like a good Haynes or Chilton manual. Heck drop a 100 and buy a FSM because trust me having a dead horn is a little problem, wait until you have to replace your brakes or replace your driveline. Easy to do, but a manual will help you a lot. Helped me tons. as well there are several write-ups, but you gotta start somewhere.
