View Full Version : Replacing Exhaust Header on a TJ w/Automatic

Howdy,

Vehicle is a '97 TJ w/factory exhaust, auto tranny, 4" SuperLift rockrunner, and skid plates from skid row.

The exhaust manifold is expired and the rest of the exhaust system is not far behind. I've searched through the related posts on this board and have some questions about what replacement manifold to buy.

First, I want to do this job as infrequently as possible. Second, I would like to install a system that improves performance but not if it means I'll be replacing the components more frequently. Finally, I want a bolt-in system, one that does not need modifications to fit.

The Borla header description says modifications *may* be necessary for Jeeps with an automatic. Does anyone know for sure and if so, what are the mods?

Can I bolt up a later year factory manifold?

I'll need to be able to pass Delaware emissions with whatever I put on.

Thanks in advance,

Steve, i just had the banks header installed on my 99tj sport (auto transmission). My mechanic liked it enough to put one on his truck. The install went smoothly with no modifications needed.

I'm sure if you search the forums you will see all the Borla and Banks exhaust manifold discussions.

I did see all the discussions on this topic but none explicitly discussed the install on an automatic and I don't want to make this any more difficult than it already will be.

I liked the Borla because it includes the head pipe but the note about needing modifications is swaying me towards the Banks. Your experience is swaying me further that way.

Howdy and welcome. Heres a 2000 manifold installed on a 97 TJ with an auto. This setup has by far less chance of cracking than ANY of the after market exhaust manifolds...IMO HTH

I've heard bad things about Borla, my buddy James brought by his Borla header to show me what he was talking about. His cracked, and Borla won't replace it for him. The incomplete/leaky welds on his Borla header were also pretty disappointing.

Pretty much everything I've read says to go with Banks.
