I have 33x12.5 tires on my YJ w/a stock D-35 rear end.Can I use my stock 28 inch tire and wheel to limp home on if I use it as a spare? Will the difference in tire diameter be a problem in a pinch situation?

i'm no expert but, if its that bad of a bind, seems like any simi-round rubber substance with somthing in the middle to bolt to would work at least until you could get it to a shop. just my thoughts. it would drive worse than hell. haha tongue.gif

i wouldnt it will add alot more stress to the drivetrain, and it will drive wierd like pull to one side, i would spend the extra now and get a same size spare to save on damage caused by using a different sized spare

well, technically cars are sold with mini spares, so i don't think it would be bad...just don't go over 45 mph, like with the cars

as long as you're not locked

If you have a locker or limited slip no.
Next if you have the factory disconnect unit or hubs, the best solution would be to put the 28" spare on the front axle then you can drive it all you want in 2WD.
Putting different size tires on the rear, will create quite a bit of extra heat/stress on the rear axle, and the Dana35 isn't exactly known for its strength.
I would just switch things around and put it on the front if you ever need to.

would be scary but with no locker or gear lsd i recon it would see ya home.

Back when I had 33s I used a 28" spare up front for a few days. It was fine.

I would only do it if you have a standard open diff and not a posi-track or locker (unless it is selectable).

You could limp home on a 28" tire, however, if you are on the trail, things might get very difficult with the 28" spare, especially with this street oriented thread design. I wouldn't recommed a spare tire more than 2 sizes smaller than the other ones. Try to get a cheap 31" AT spare tire. Also, the back of your Wrangler will look much better.

you could probably get away with the 28 inch spare tire. . . not the best solution. May I ask why you don't want a fullsize spare? is it money? have to figure out how to put it on the tailgate or inside the Jeep?
it would be wise to get a fullsize spare. Tires can slice pretty easily offroad if you make a mistake or happen to go over a sharp rock the wrong way.
Get a 33x12.5 used tire at a tire shop then find a junkyard rim or buy a cheap black rim with the correct back spacing to put the tire on. Have the tire shop mount/balance it. You can probably find a used BFGoodrich all terrain or mud terrain easily.
When I had my XJ I had to get a fullsize spare for a sticker to run on the beach . . .granted it only had p215 75 R15s on it. I went to a junkyard got the same XJ rim that I needed and then bought a used tire at a hole in the wall tire shop and had them mount/balance the tire.
I think all in all it cost me about $50. $25 for the rim and $25 for the tire. I'm sure a used 33" will run a bit more.

I dont have a large tire wheel carrier on the back yet and I will get that with 33 to hang on it.Right now I would just like to hang the stock tire back there incase I need it.Most of my travels are on the pavement or dirt roads. While we are on the subject do you guys have any recommendations for a swing away tire bumper?I kinda like the Warn stuff I have looked at.

i wouldn't put it on the back though, just play it safe and move that undersized tire to the front, personally the front right.

Fyrhog, the Warn is an excellent product - all of their products are great - the industry standard in many people's view. There are a lot of other quality makers out there as well, however. Personally, I chose Body Armor. They have heavy construction, good looks, easy installation and a price I could afford. Their swingout tire carrier holds two Jerry cans between the tire and tail gate ( I like the protection of that) and you can also mount a Hi-Lift jack on it. The tire carrier is in a receiver sort of setup that allows it to be slid in or out (to mount the cans and jack) and has a cynch bolt that allows you to snug the receiver assembly up to keep it from rattling. Q-tec sells a good selection - check 'em all out and make your choice.
