HELP ME!!! GOT A 97 SAHARA WITH AUTOMATIC AND 70,000 MILES. EVERY TIME I TAKE OFF FROM A DEAD STOP I GET THIS CHIRPING NOISE. IT APPEARS TO BE IN THE DASH/FIREWALL AREA OR MAYBE UNDER NEATH, CAN'T REALLY TELL. TONIGHT I LOCKED THE TRANSFER IN 4-HIGH AND IT STOPED MAKING THE NOISE. MY FRIEND THINKS MAYBE TORQ CONVERTER??? I KINDA THOUGHT HE MAY BE RIGHT UNTILL I DISCOVERED IT DOESN'T DO IT IN 4-HIGH. WHAT DO YA THINK, MAY BE A U-JOINT MAYBE???

Turn off your caps lock, it's the same as yelling.
"Chirping sparrows" as it's called by some is caused by the front driveshaft CVC being dry. It needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

Same thing happened to me.....sounds like your front centerball inside your front driveshaft's CV (constant velocity) joint may be going bad......

The way the I knew for certain was to spray some wd-40 on the top joint of your front driveshaft making sure to get rubber sleeve between the two u-joints. If the squeaking stops for a lil while you know for sure that thats the culprit.....HTH

and DO NOT keep your T-case locked in 4HI on the street/high traction surfaces because youll be hearing BANG BANG BANG from a whole bunch of other things if you do....

Hey guys, just want to say thanks for responding to my my question. Not really the answer i wanted to hear but that is better than replacing a torq converter i guess. Got any idea on what rebuilding or replacing my front shaft will cost???? Great to be a member on this site!!! Just hang with me till i get the feel of things here.
Later guys,

try taking off the front CV shaft and lubing up the fittings with a needle fitting for the reticulating ball. to see if that changes the sound once you put it back in the Jeep.

You could always get the replacement parts if it looks worn, right now try greasing the ball and the other parts of the front driveshaft first to see if that helps.

good luck
