I have a '98 Wrangler with a 4.0 5 speed. Out of the blue the engine starts to pop, sputter, lose power. I have to pull over, rev the engine and wait for the problem to clear then I can go on. Sometimes if I push in the clutch while moving and rev the engine the problem will clear temporarily. The check engine light does not come on and there are no problems logged into the computer. I have new wires, cap, button, plugs. Dealer performed "de-carb" (wtf ?) to no avail, they don't seem to know what else to do. I think the engine is getting too much fuel, or not, who knows. It's very frustrating and getting worse every day. Appreciate any help.

Welcome to the board.
Anyways, my first guess is the TPS unit. The throttle position sensor, maybe starting to go bad, or could already have dead spots in it.
Is there any specific RPM, gas pedal spot, or MPH this happens?

After having the TPS checked, have the fuel psi checked. Have the fuel injectors checked as well. If you aren't getting a CEL, I'd look into the fuel system a little closer because the fuel system isn't going to throw a CEL in 9 out of 10 cases, but yet it will cause all sorts of problems.

My WAG is crank sensor. It can act up without throwing a code.
I think you're just going to have to wait until it dies or throws a code to get your definitive answer. That always sucks.
Good luck!

i had a similar problem. it turned out to be a bad fuel pump. it started sputtering and shutting down like i turned the ignition off. it happend every once in awile and then became very frequent until i had the pump replaced. i was told that the fuel pump will not give any kind of code to the computer.
