Silly question time

Ok,It's not like I'm a newbie at this, but how do ya take the gear shift knob off a '04 Wrangler? My son got me a neat after market one for xmas and after looking the problem over, I cant see how it screws on...The factory shift diagram insert comes out,(I have had to straighten in out a few times..it ends up 180 out after a while) but after that I'm lost..I don't want to tear it up so how do ya go about it?

I know on my 99 you took the shift pattern cover off then there was a bolt that you removed, then the whole knob unscrewed.

Yep, an '04 is the same...replaced my factory shift knob with a tapped out 8-ball.

How do you get the shift pattern cover off?

I pried (sp?) my shift pattern cover off with a small thin screwdriver, popped right off. Didn't hurt anything.
