I don’t know what forum this is best suited for so I’m posting it here; what is the best method for splicing/repairing a severed/broken synthetic winch rope? And won’t a timber hitch temporally hold a synthetic line on a winch spool? I asked this in JU but the links that were shown can’t be accessed by a MIL NET. TIA

Your IT guys must hate you, I have no prob at my mil work computer.
Dont know how to get ya the info other than those links, PBB doesn't allow linking to the pics. You should be able to get the samson site tho, they have a GSA contract for rope and its a PDF file. I'll see what else I can find for ya.

Lets give this a shot.
This is all quoted from a post on the PBB by Scott@rockstomper.com who distributes the amsteel blue winch line. He did the write up, took the pics, and posted them on line.
This splicing guide builds off a prior one... check the other at http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=177074 for a description of some of the super-high-tech tools and techniques in use here.
Lay out your rope, so that it's not tangled up, with the ends you want to splice together, near each other. Measure out for your spliceback (I use 13" for the 3/8" rope shown--it's farther than necessary, but more isn't detrimental to performance)
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-001S.JPG
Scrunch one of the rope ends at your spliceback length.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-002S.JPG
Use your high-tech splicing tool to open up a hole in the end. 6 strands on each side.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-003S.JPG
Put the other of the two ends you're joining, through the hole you just opened.

Pull the end you just stuck through the hole, through till your spliceback mark is beyond the rope you're pulling it through.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-005S.JPG
Scrunch up the portion of the rope you just pulled through, in the area of the spliceback mark.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-006S.JPG
Find the other end (the long end) of the rope half that you just pulled this tail through. Make sure this portion of the rope is not tangled, or you'll have knots to deal with shortly.

Use your high-tech splice tool to open a hole (6 strands on each side) of the short tail that's currently through the other half of the rope.

Pass the far end of the rope half you just untangled, through the hole you just made in the tail of the other rope half.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-009S.JPG
Pull the entire rope half through that hole.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-010S.JPG
Snug up the rope halves--this is easiest to do by simply pulling on the long tails.

Hook one short tail on your splicing tool.

Tape up your splicing tool to the end of the rope tail.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-013S.JPG
Scrunch up the long tail adjoining the short tail that the splicing tool is now taped to.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-014S.JPG
Start the splicing tool into the center of the long tail.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-015S.JPG
Guiding the splicing tool down the center of the long tail, feed the short tail into the long tail.

Bury the short tail into the long, leaving enough scrunch to completely cover the short tail later.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-017S.JPG
Bring the splicing tool out between strands, bringing the short tail tip with it.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-018S.JPG
Cut off the tape and splicing tool. Boxcutters work better than dull diving knives for this task.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-019S.JPG
Hook the other short tail.

Tape up the splicing tool to the tail.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-021S.JPG
Bury the short tail into the remaining long tail.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-022S.JPG
Bring the tail out and remove the splicing tool.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/recovery/rope/splicing/endtoend/MVC-023S.JPG
Grasping right at the center of the splice, work the outer layer of rope tight against the inner layer, on both sides. This is easiest to do from center to outside, sliding your fists apart on the rope.

All done.

Again, I did not do this write up, I dont want to take any credit away from Scott at Rockstomper who did everyone a huge favor by taking the time to do this write up for all.

Samson has specific directions for creating a taper, a lighter is not used. Unfortunatly I cant find a pic on line for ya. It involves shortening alternate lays of the line on the bitter end.

Go figure. At work I can not shop Qtec, but I am allowed to surf the BB. I just had to mail myself the link to a BB topic and now can surf the board.

I'll ask again?
And won’t a timber hitch temporally hold a synthetic line on a winch spool?
