OK guys....thanks for all the responses about my oversized spare. I think I am going to build something for the inside where the backseat was.

But now.....I live in Colorado, and am pretty sure by law I must have a third taillight. Any ideas on remounting it somewhere so it does not look stupid just hanging htere with no spare below it.....thanks again guys...always open to new ideas....

Took mine off years ago....most folks don't know enough about Jeeps to date them accurately enough to know if they are supposed to have the idiot eye light or not. If and when I am ever asked about it I plan to give my usual deer in the head lights look and ask if there was ever supposed to be one..... ;)

Colorado Laws (http://198.187.128.12/colorado/lpext.dll?f=templates&fn=fs-main.htm&2.0) (Mozilla Firefox unfriendly, needs Java script).
I have eliminated the third tail light and have not had any problems with any Colorado John Q Laws. When I was planning my flush round tail light mod, I was able to contact CDOT (Info@dot.state.co.us) and get lots of information in the form of a direct answer from them when I needed absolute clarification. They are very helpful (I think they know me by name since I "inform" them of exceptionally long red lights at selected intersections tongue.gif ). Really, they are fantastic people to work with. This is kind of neat (http://www.aev-conversions.com/ComingSoon.html) from AEV.

post edit: Oops! you got rid of the spare. Maybe someone else would need it.

I like the look of the flush mounted ones...but perhaps the third brake light needs to be at a certain height...who knows...

I live in southern Colorado and have been pulled over a few times for various things and not one mention of not having a 3rd tailight. I have been without one for almost a year now. Hey my highlift-jack blocks my liscence plate and I have never gotten any complaints. My advice you dont need it.

I have a write up on the flush mounted round tail lights (http://bbb.quadratec.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=38;t=002078) if anyone is interested.

Hey TONKA those are sweet!

I was thinking more of a flush third brake light with the flush regular ones...I saw it on another board, but for the life of me I can't remember which one :( It was more of a rectangle and it was on a Jeep without a spare or carrier...looked pretty sweet as well...he had his backup lights incorporated into the ends of the rectangular light...

Thanks. I have seen flush rectangular lights put in a diagonal pattern with back up light incorporated in the pattern.

I do not see why a flush light could be put into the gate. You would have to get rid of the stock tire carrier. Two issuse that could be a problem: 1. access from the back would require quite a bit of cutting, especially with that heavy of a gate. 2. the thiness of the entire gate might make a single rectangular hole in the facia of the gate difficult to cut. However, a cutting a round hole (using a hole saw) for a round light might solve problem #2. Since the TJ gate has wires running in it, there is no problem getting the wires to the light. The indentions in the gate might make it difficult to fish the wires, but still do-able.

I guess if one wanted to, one could just take the third brake light out of the stock carrier and flush mount it into the tailgate...then you wouldn't really have to worry about re-wiring...
