View Full Version : YJ: Fixing A Leaking Transfer Case?

Well, I spent most of my day crawling around under the YJ and adjusting the e-brake. This was my first, detailed inspection of the underside since I brought her home a month ago.
I noticed that my xfer case is leaking around that "cone" thing where the drive shaft goes inside. Is this a common place for them to leak. I doesn't appear to have a gasket, rather some black, RTV sealant.
Is this is pain for me to fix? Should I go for it? Anyone else taken one of these apart?

I wouldn't say its normal on the NP231, I've never had one leak, but it can happen. There isn't a gasket, its just silicone.
Check out this link (http://www.4x4xplor.com/SYE-CV.html), its SYE install on a TJ, so its just a little different (it doesn't have the second tailhousing), but other than that its the same, they have some good pictures too. It will show you whats involved in taking that apart.
Its really not bad, if your are reasonably mechanically inclined you shouldn't have any problems, and the best part is, the case can stay in the Jeep.

Is it leaking from the sealant or the seal where the driveshaft goes into the TC?

It's leaking from the sealant where the cone attaches to the xfer case. The drivshaft, u-joints, etc, are all bone dry. The area where the input shaft goes into the xfer case is also free from leakage. This is more of big seepage than an outright leak from the area where the cone bolts to the xfer case, but it bothers me.

Its an easy fix. Pop the driveshaft out and remove the bolts that hold the cone on. Clean both sides with solvent and re-apply silicone. Bolt her back together and your set.
