I have an 85 CJ7 with the 258 and the stock carb that is giving me a lot of problems. I am going to replace the carb with a Weber 32/36 DGEV carb and new ignition system. I would like to remove the computer and emissions systems.
Which ignition should I go with a DUI or MDS? I want to do it right the first time, and use what I buy now after I rebuild the motor in the spring. When I rebuild in the spring I plan on putting on headers.
Will I need to do anything else?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Double check your emmissions regs before you ditch the emmissions stuff.
personally i would go with a stock GM HEI distributor.
i believe you can adaot them to a 258

MDS makes some really good ignition systems

I dunno about the DUI system, but the MSD system is outstanding and has an excellent reputation developed over many years. And in case you need to do a search on it, it's MSD, not MDS. smile.gif

I'm running a custom tuned Howell TBI with the DUI ignition and it works great. I found the best running with Bosch Platinum 2 plugs, no gapping and no problems.
I found I had to retard the timing a bit with the advance curve that DUI supplied. The suggested 12 deg BTDC was producing some knocking (hey, when you take out the computer you lose the advantage of a knock sensor and automatic timing adjustment). I retarded the timing to about 8 degrees and run super unleaded to make sure.
The advantage with buying the DUI is it has all the components already there, the gear, advance weights/springs, coil on the cap, and it is a one wire install. The biggest problem is getting a wire that is not going through a resistive wire that is on with the ignition. I ended up installing a relay that takes a wire from the battery directly to the distributor switched by the old ignition wire. Works great.
And, you can get the cap in several colors and it looks nice.

Well, one correction, you do have to hook up the tach wire, too. So, two wire.

MSD is what I run and recommend. I'd go with their ready to run distributor, HVC coil and plug wires. If you wanted to run a multiple spark box, their "old" 6AL or "new" Digital 6 boxes are solid performers.
