View Full Version : Alternatives to a Snorkel?

So on my last wheeling trip, I ended up with no choice but to ford up a river, and at one point the passenger side tail light was under water, luckly on the drive side the lug nuts weren't even touching the water (talk about a hairy moment), so I was fine with it, as the air filter was above water.
Anyways, since I can't take a hint, and stay out of the water, are there alternatives to a snorkel? I really think I'd rip one off if it was plastic and bolted to the side of the Jeep, on the tight trails I do.
I've thought about flipping the airfilter box to make it intake up higher, also considered moving the air filter inside the cab, but inside the cab wouldn't it make noise?
Ideas?

I'm thinking about the one that comes through the cowl in front of the windshield (to the right of the vent). Google it and see what comes up...

Hello, I just installed a snorkel that my wife bought me for Christmas. I have been down some pretty tight trails since. Some trails are so tight that my side walls on my tires bounce off trees. The snorkel inlet is about 2 inches higher than the windshield and level with the soft top when it is up. I would definitely rip off a fender flare or mirror, or windshield mounted KC light, before the snorkel. Haven't checked fuel mileage though, I went from 33's to 35's on same day. But, my problem is not forging rivers, but the splash from the water or mud into my box while out playing. (Three air fliters later)
Could try and post pics if you would like. Let me know. (Just my 2 cents)
One of the things on my to do list is a mod that kwrangln showed me on his black heep. He took pvc and made two 90* bends out of the front of the airbox in place of the factory intake. Then he ran shop vac hose to up near the firewall / cowl area. Very simple, very inexpensive. Doublewide engineering at it's finest... :D

There is this fella up here who drilled a hole through his hood and ran PVC through it facing the windshield...I suppose if you didn't like the look of that, you could make the elbow that comes through the hood removable and have some sort of flat plug painted the colour of the Jeep to slap in the hole when you aren't on the trails...

Unless you plan on going deeper than your headlights for an extended period of time, I have yet to find a place that a snorkel through the hood is needed. KMCL spoke of my last heeps setup, air intake routed to back by the brake booster, which worked damn well. I've dipped the headlights underwater with it and kept the filter dry. As long as you are making slow steady progress, the natural bow wave raises water up higher by the grill and the backside of the wave is much lower by the firewall.
Here's an example, there's 35's with a SOA suspension under there somewhere.

Guess those big ole snorkels look kinda cool tho. ;)

i put a Rock-It max flow intake on my XJ and the top of the cone filter touches the hood, so thats some deep water... like kwrangln said unless its above your headlight for an extended period of time it shouldn't be a problem. if its deeper than that you've got other issuse anyways, like your computer. personalyy i'll never have water more than a couple inches above the door jams. which gives me around 28 inches of water to go threw.

As with any open, non-OEM filter a water barrier is essential if you don't want to experience hydraulic lock...
