so all the holes in the frame of a yj, i think are so the frame can bend and give in case of a crash. am i correct? are there any other reasons for those holes? if not, would there be a problem with welding them closed? would it help, or harm the frame at all?
i have another question too, but don't remember what it is.....so, i'll post it here when i remember. yeah, ok then TIA.

I can't answer you r question as to why all th eholes are in the frame. Some are tie down holes used when the vwhicle is loaded on trains and trucks after leaving the factory. I would be careful welding on the frame without good reason. It may seem like a good idea to weld up the holes for strength but the damage done with all the heat is also bad. I would leave it alone unless it is damaged.

does anyone know what the holes are for? has anyone patched them?
Every hole takes a little weight out of the frame. They are carefully engineered to keep the frame at maximum strength and least possible weight.

As far as I know they are "crumple zones" that allow the fram to crunch a little in an accident. I probably wouldnt weld them closed... why would you need to anyway?

no they are not crumple zones -belive me my sister hit a telephone pole in mine and none of the holes crumpled the solid area crumpled..
the holes are for ventalation/drainage so when you get snow, sand, water, dirt, mudice wat ever it is into your frame it has a way out so that it does not rot your frame (same theory as the drain holes in your floor) this is really important when you live inside the"rust belt" of our fine country ,like me :D

well, almost all of the holes are on the sides or on top. so they can't be for drainage, and my thoughts were it may make the frame stronger, plus keep all the water and mud out of the frame. if they were crumple zones as said above, wouldn't it help the frame strength if i closed them up? i guess the only thing to think about is the heat on the frame.
The holes are probably there to prevent the frame from overheating due to frame flex. If they bother you, just cut them out.

The "Crumple Zone" is a series of 4 holes drilled in the top corners of the frame just under the rear of the front fenders. Other holes in the frame are for bolting on different options, tie down's during transport, and there are some on the bottom for drainage. While Edudly's concerns about welding on the frame ring true for larger trucks where the frame rails are heat treated, the jeep frame is mild steel and you should have no problem welding on it as long as you follow basic engineering practices. While it is possible to weld closed every hole in the frame, you'd need to have the frame bare to get to em all (I helped Zach do this to his project frame a while back). Doing only the holes that you can reach with the body and everything else on there is about pointless.

thanks kwrangln, that's what i thought, and i have the body off, and well, everything off right now, so it is the time to do it.
