I replaced my starter last year and it is already acting up again. I am wondering if the mean green starter is worth the extra money, or should I put the stock replacement on again?

check your flywheel that could be the problem....you can check it by removing the starter and have someone else spinning the motor manually while you check the teeth on the starter...chipped teeth could be screwing up your starter

Bad connections can be hard on starters, but I'm with we3jeepers by looking at your setup. My started frequently gets sumberged, or filled with mud/mud water, etc. all of which is not healthy for it by any means.

87 YJThis is the problem. Odd's are your using the wrong starter. The 87 model uses the same starter as an 86 CJ, while the starter for 88 to 90 is different. Lot's of places get the starters wrong when giving you the parts. Try it... Common problem.

Uggg, I hate starters, been fighting with mine on the new heep for a year now, been through 3 starters in that time and it hasn't left the parking lot.

Mudjocky, I have a 258 adapted to a 700R4 via a novak adapter. It uses the older fomoco starter due to the throw required by the adapter spacing the tranny back. Any ideas?

For the origional poster, my old YJ head a healthy appatite for starters when I did alot of mud running, I actually had 2 starters with lifetime warranty's on them, and would just swap em out as needed, always keeping a new one in the wings.

I agree about the connections and the mud. I have had to open and clean mine up at least once per year. I would start with a new Starter if possible and keep it clean if you submerse it. I too have had the problem. Don't try to seal it up either. I tried that it only kept the water in the starter. Good Luck

I filled my starter up with water last winter wheelin in the Pines. After that, it would freeze up overnight. Had to crawl under there in the morning with a propane torch to thaw it out. :D

make sure you have the right starter and its on straight enough tighten both bolts evenly untill its tight..if that doesnt work you have a problem with the flywheel or wires..pull the starter out look at the flywheel..if its worn at the edge/center that might be your problem.not the starter..a better description of what happens when you hit the key would also help...is there a click..deos it turn when you jump the selenoid..or does it sound like it spins but doesnt turn the motor..it all helps
