View Full Version : What's an engine rebuild typically cost?

I'm shopping for a YJ, and I've got a line on one that's supposedly in good shape except for the engine. I'm not sure precisely what's wrong with the engine -- the owner just says it needs to be rebuilt. It's dirt cheap.

It's a 95 with the 2.5. Around what would it cost to get the engine rebuilt? I'm trying to figure out if it would be worth buying it and paying for the engine work.

TIA.

(Mods: I wasn't sure if I should put this in tech or O/T. Sorry if this is the wrong place.)

$1500 to $2000 if you have it done preofessionally. Consider a rebuilt long block and put it in your self. You can get a good warranty that way

Unfortunately, I don't have access to a shop or the tools necessary to do it. I also don't know what the hell I'm doing smile.gif

Find a shop that installs engines and get an estimate from them

I paid 2300 to have my 4.2L rebuilt. That included pulling and reinstall. Figure 1500 if you can pull it and reinstall yourself.

I had a short block 360 built for $650. Heck, I couldn't even buy the parts for that. It was punched out .060. I was kind of leary for it being such a low price but it has held up to my thrashing it for the last year. Shop around and you may find a deal like this. I spent a few hours on the phone calling many different shops here is El Paso.

I'd also recommend getting a reman'd engine. See if you can find local jeepers to help you install it for some side money.

I was very lucky and found my reman'd 258 with 10k on it for $400 cash, HEI and 2100 already on it. If I hadn't found that deal, I would likely still be cursing the old poorly-running 258 that I had in there.

Anyway, a reman'd engine will have a warranty in most cases, and be 1000-1500 or so.

I personally would walk away from the 2.5 and find one with a 4.0. Way more power, not much worse MPGs, and they still push 300-350k miles. If you're not going to lift it and put bigger tires on it though it might not be too bad.

Personally, I would find a low mileage engine from a junk yard to stick in it.
