Ok I've gotten to where I'd rather use my Ubuntu laptop than my desktop, as I like many of the features in Linux. So I decided I'm going to dual boot XP and Ubuntu on the desktop, only booting into XP for gaming, there will be no internet access to XP.
Heres the problem, my desktop will not boot using the live cd, it starts into Ubuntu and makes the start up noise, but then stops, never loads any icons or anything. Which also means I can't install it either.
I'm trying to run 32-bit Ubuntu, EdgyEft.
My desktop (I think this is what would be relevant hardawre),
3800 AMD64 Dual Core
A8N-SLI Deluxe
2 - BFG 7800 GTs.
SATA Raptor HD.
2 Gig of ram
Should SATA just work in Linux?

Edgy should support SATA without a problem. I've run older versions of Ubuntu on high end workstations with a SATA RAID and it picked it up just fine. Have you tried to kick off a text install?

I didn't want to try an install until I found out why it wouldn't boot off the live CD. That had me a little concerned.

Not yet, I'll be looking into it more tonight, and tommorow, as I have to format my desktop anyways, thanks to a virus I picked up, so much for a fully updated XP machine and "safe" surfing...

There's another option too. I believe that VMware gives its VMware server or player or something for free now. It'll let you create "virtual machines" to test OS's. Might be a good way to test Linux while still running Windows.

Dapper loves SATA, I don't even have any IDE drives anymore in my desktop. Don't know about Edgy, never got to upgrading mine yet.
VMware server is now free, you can run any kind of combo you wish. I run XP on VMWare in Dapper for Photoshop.
About your desktop not booting, did you try any of the NOAPIC option at boot ? My Asus MB is positively not booting without the NOAPIC option.
Another thing you could do is remove the quiet and splash options when booting from Cd, you'll have text scrolling but it might give you a hint on where it freezes.

I think its the graphics cards. I tried the ubuntu forums, and it seems there suggestion is to take one of the graphics cards out... It picks up the SATA fine, the sound card works, it locks up when graphics start to come up. When I did the text based install, it seems to pick up the network cards and such, so it pretty much has to be the GPUs.
What is the NOAPIC option?

I'm not very sure myself, iI believe it's some kind of an Intel architecture thing, that tends to not run on AMD boxes .
Booting with NOAPIC disables it.

Booting with NOAPIC disables it. I'll hunt through my BIOS and see if I can't find something for that.

BN If you are using VM just for photoshop, then you are wasting a lot of horsepower. Instead try GIMP or if you are more familiar with the PS layout, try GIMPSHOP

OMG, Please have mercy.
Anything BUT GIMP.
I don't know what kind of lunatic has designed that thing or what he was smoking when he wrote thet piece of hmmm, software.
It is an insult to anyone who is taking image processing somewhat seriously.
No GIMP for me, thank you very much.
