tranny problems?

Hi

So, I hear some "whirring" type noises at specific rpms in my 2000 dakota...what are the chances that's a tranny problem? It doesn't happen on all trips...just some. Also, when parked I occasionally hear some rattling...which sounds like something under the hood/inside the drivers side wheel well is loose...could the whirring type sound just be the engine hitting a resonance type frequency to exaggerate whatever might be loose?

Can I have someone plug a computer in that will tell me if its a tranny issue?

At one time I too had some kind of "rattle'n" going on..come to find out that the guts of the catilatic converter were burned up and rusted out..it didnt do it all the time, just once in a while..
