I hope so too. It's still 2.15 around here, but it has been dropping.

I got it for a 1.96 the other day and was ecstatic. Sad sad times when you're that happy about paying 2 dollars a gallon. :( smile.gif

It finally hit 2.00 here too but some places started going up again yesterday. Paper said big oil like Exxon will cause them to rise again, they are getting to low. tongue.gif Of course, Exxon made 40 billion last year.

We are around $2.15 for gas...
...but, can anyone please explain to me, in a logical common-sense way, why the heck diesel is so much more still?? I know it is affected by the home heating oild season, but before the war on "terror" it was always pretty close or less than the cheapest gas. Now it is usually more than premium. I know there are a bunch of factors, but can somone let me know what they truly are???

I don't understand it either, but a program on Discovery Channel showed it is produced in the same towers that gasoline is. If I remember correctly, as the vapors enter the top of this tower, they are heated and as the chemical moves through the tower the different octane levels stop in different levels and is separated. Diesel is the last weight to separate. Actually, I think that was on Modern Marvels on The History Channel and I can't say I got it all right, it's been a couple months since I saw it.

About two weeks ago the prices dropped to $2.04 around here. Now they are back up to $2.09. I sure wish they would drop below $2 per gallon. That would be nice. I really think this is a racket that the oil companies have going on. And that pisses me off. I can still remember back when I was in high school, before Operation Desert Storm, I filled my Firebird up on regular octane for $0.98 per gallon. Has anyone else noticed that ever since we set foot in the Persian Gulf that our gas prices are ridiculously high?

I am not sure, but I thought it had a lot to do with the fact that there are a whole lot more diesel engines around now. A whole lot more diesel pickup trucks, small cars, vans, and heavy trucks. Again, I think it is all about the greed of the oil companies.

1 Euro a liter here. With current exchange rate of $1.30 to the Euro it comes to about $4.75 a gallon.

I know there are a bunch of factors, but can somone let me know what they truly are??? Diesel is taxed much more than unleaded because the vast majority of it is used by the trucking industry. It is basicly the government trying to get extra revenue that can be easily distributed among consumers. Everyone buys products at the store, right? Virtually all those products got to that store on a truck running on diesel. The trucking company might have to charge the store $50 more because of the higher price of diesel, but the store can charge 1 cent more on all thier merchandise to make up for it. How many people are not going to buy something because it is 1 penny more?
End result? the government generates more revenue.
If the lawmakers raised taxes on unleaded, they would be less likely to be re-elected.

CA. Gas. Prices. Need I say more? At any given point, tack on 30 cents a gallon compared to what y'all are paying...

From my brother who is in the industry:
Diesel is now more expensive than regular gasoline because the government made them clean up the diesel fuel in the refining process. Diesel used to contain a lot (relatively speaking) of sulfur, but they made them take out the sulfur because it's such a pollutant. Costs more to take out the sulfur and make the fuel cleaner burning. Also, I think that diesel is made by combining refined oil and refined gasoline - it doesn't come out of the refining process as oneproduct. That extra step probably adds some costs....

It is $2.26 here and we have a refinery in our town. Everywhere else our refinery supplies is cheaper than our prices.
