inally....carmax has a bumper to bumper warranty....36,000 miles or 3 years...this would cover me up until 56,000 miles on the TJ since it already has 20,000 on it...

the kicker...$1200

think it is worth it...i opted out, but now i am rethinking....my opinion is that something dramatic would have to happen to it in those 3 years to get my moneys worth...i am putting AMSOIL in the engine, tranny, and tcase...not wheeling it at all...so what are the odds?!?! hmmm...opinions?

Well since your not wheeling it, basically it all comes down to how hard you are on it. If you drive like a maniac than I would definately go for it, but if you are a tame driver than I would think twice about paying 1200 dollars for a warranty. Plus it all depends on your jeep some jeeps can go 100,000 miles with not one problem. Then others go a few 1000 miles and have problems. It varies from jeep to jeep. I know I wasnt too much help but good luck with your decision.

if you take care of it and drive civilized, save $1200.

If you have to see how fast it can go from 0-60 everytime you start out and sometimes remember to change the oil every 8,000 miles, spend $1200 and save thousands.

those warrenties are a hoot. i'd recommend it... I got one when i bought my 02 TJ, and already have used it for 1700 in repairs relating to defective/non-maint... and all i paid was a 100.

I thought the warrantees were more than 3 years (unless it is what is remaining on a used vehicle). Just like other added warranties, I don't buy them because most of them is a waste of money (I was offered one for a $12 phone  ). However, this is a big ticket item creating more of a delema.

Since the answer is not clear, you cannot blame yourself no matter what you decide. So don't loose any sleep over this. ;)

Last year I got my grandaughter a 97 TJ from CarMax an under the 30 day warranty I took it back two times both times they had it 3 days an I ended up fixing it myself the work they tryed to do was poor, very poor, an half ass. Just my 2cents on the warranty.

you can also get a 5 year 50K mile warranty for $1600...

that seems like it is more realistic, but 1600 is alot to dish

I would avoid it and save your $$. In your other thread you were talking about a 2" BB and 31s. Carmax will void out your warranty so fast it will make your head spin if you try to bring it in for warranty work. I purchased a extended warranty on my 02 from a local independent dealer, and told them I was planning on a mild lift and tires. The service manager told me they would honor the warranty IF I brought it back to their shop for work.

I would imagine they only did that since they are a smaller dealer and want to keep their customers. Carmax on the other hand, probaby not so much.

I paid 1200 to have one on a truck I bought, the only repair ever done on it was a recall part so it didn't make a difference other than raising my payment. I wouldn't, but ultimately it is your choice to make.

It sounds like some people use em, some people dont... but if you need to do a major repair, such as a faulty oil pump or something of high cost, you'd regret not having it. smile.gif

I guess it all depends on your mechanical skills. If you can replace wheel bearings, water pump, u-joints, alternator, radiator, hoses and the like it would be hard to justify the 3-year $1200.00 dollar warranty.
On the other had lets say one of the main parts goes south, engine, tranny, diffs or transfer case the warranty would come in handy. Ex. having someone else replace a head gasket could cost you 400-800 dollars.

If you are comfortable working in and replacing parts for engine, diffs and transfer case I wouldn’t worry about the warranty. You can rebuild and engine, diff, or transfer case for far less than $1200.00 and a transmission rebuild is less than $1200.00.

Only you know your mechanical comfort zone and will be able to justify $1200-1600.
If I had a limited amount of tools and skill I would get the 3-year $1200.00 warranty. When something minor breaks, or wears out, try to fix it yourself, get the tools need and the factory service manual, if you cant fix it take it to the shop its under warranty.

My theory in the extended warranty game is:

No one... I.E. manufacturer , dealer, or retailer
will offer anything that COSTS them ..they are in the profit game...

it's the same with extended warranty offers,
it's a gamble, with them making the profit.

They are gambling that nothing will happen
to the product within the allotted time or mileage.

And your are betting something will...

The HOUSE usually wins.....

Years ago I bought a used 91 Ford van and I paid for the extended warranty. Just before it ran out, I had my great Mechanic son check it all out.

Clutch, rear seals, air conditioning and a number of items were covered and repaired by the Ford Stealership! It was way cool, as I don't care for them to this day and they lost money with me!

Revenge can taste soooo sweet!
